Team AmSam off to Pacific Mini Games
The American Samoa National Olympic Committee (ASNOC) is sending weightlifting and beach volleyball athletes to compete in the 2013 edition of the Mini Pacific Games hosted by Wallis and Futuna. The team will depart the morning of August 30 and return September 14. The Mini Pacific Games will run from September 2 -12.
Weightlifters Hasu Kim will be lifting in the 85 kg category and Apineru Vaoga will compete in the +105 kg category at Kafika Hall from September 3-5. The athletes will be accompanied by Coach Fanaufouina Popoali'I of the American Samoa Weightlifting Association.
Kim and Vaoga recently returned from the Oceania Weightlifting Championships held in Brisbane last month. This served as their regional test event for the Mini Pacific Games.
Beach volleyballers Sam Luaiva and Salvation Mikaele will be taking the sand court at Kolopelu, Futuna to vie for a top ranking in beach volleyball from September 4-10.
This will be Luaiva’s second attempt at a Pacific Games medal. Luaiva lost the bronze medal match in the New Caledonia 2011Pacific Games and returned home in fourth place.
Luaiva has been chosen by his fellow athletes to serve as the flag bearer for the Opening Ceremony. Luaiva and Mikaele will be accompanied by Coach Josie Muasau of the American Samoa Volleyball Association.
Savaliga Afu, president of the American Samoa Volleyball Association will serve as a technical official for the volleyball competition on Wallis. Although traveling with the AS delegation, he will part ways with the team upon arrival to be integrated into the Technical Officials system.
Parks and Recreation Director Pili Gaoteote and ASG Sports Commissioner Ethan Lake are traveling to Wallis to participate in the Pacific Sport Ministers Meeting organized concurrently with the Mini Games on September 1.
ASNOC President Victor Langkilde and ASNOC Secretary General Erika Radewagen are scheduled to attend the Pacific Games Council Meeting on September 8. Radewagen also serves as the delegation’s Chef de Mission to the Mini Games.
