Matautia selected as new senator for Sua County
Traditional leaders and orators of Sua County have selected military veteran Matautia A. Lui Afonotele to fill one of the two county seats in the Senate left vacant by the death of Sen. Sua Vaiuli Matautia of Afono.
The selection was made during a county meeting yesterday morning at Afono village, which is also the home-village of the new senator-elect.
County traditional chief Fa’amausili Mau Mau Jr. confirmed to Samoa News following the meeting that Matautia was in fact selected by the county council.
When contacted for comment, Matautia confirmed that he was selected, saying that he is pleased to serve his county and the government through this new appointment and is prepared to serve in the Senate.
Matautia, 59, said he served in the U.S. Armed Forces starting in 1973 and was stationed in places around the world such as Israel. He retired in 1989 when he was wounded while in the military and thereafter returned home to serve his family, village and county. He was later bestowed the Matautia chiefly title.
As required by law, the county chief (or fa’alupega) will now issue a certification of the county’s decision signed by those in attendance and sent to the Office of the Senate President as well as the Office of Samoan Affairs.
Local law also requires that the governor issue a ‘writ of special election’ to fill the vacant Sua county seat. It's not immediately clear if the governor has issued such a writ.
The original Samoan version of this story is published in today’s Le Lali.
