Tutuila public schools on track to open tomorrow
Public schools on Aunu’u and the main island of Tutuila are set to open tomorrow, Monday, Aug 26, according to the latest information from the Dept. of Education and the Governor’s office.
Start of the new school year was initially set for Aug. 12 but was delayed for one-week after a Department of Health inspection report found that 10 out of 30-plus public school facilities were faced with unsanitary conditions and safety problems.
However, the DOE - after consultation with the governor - postponed the opening of schools on Tutuila and Aunu’u for another week to completed necessary repairs and upgrades, while schools in Manu’a opened on Aug. 19.
During a cabinet meeting Friday, Gov. Lolo Matalasi Moliga says the rest of the public schools are set to open Monday and this was echoed by DOE director Vaitinasa Dr. Salu Hunkin-Finau who thanked directors for their hard work under the governor’s Adopt-A-School initiative that helped DOE very much.
She says a policy has now been set in place instructing principals and administrators to see that their respective schools are clean before school is out every Friday. She also says that parent and teacher associations for all schools have been asked to assist in any way they can.
She says a site visit was conducted early Friday morning and found that everything in is place for the start of the new school except for some minor issues to be addressed.
The DOE director also stated that it’s important to get parents involved because children are first taught at home and children should have respect for government assets and property set aside for educating them.
Meanwhile, Lolo says he plans to organize a group of public and private school administrators to come together and work as a team to make sure that all public and private schools have the same requirements when cleared by Health Department inspectors.
