Three Am.Samoa youth make it into Junior Tennis championship finals
The International Tennis Federation (ITF) Oceania Plate 2013 completed its final competition yesterday with five American Samoa junior tennis players present in Nadi, Fiji, however Samoa News was not able to retrieve the final day results as of press time.
Heading into the semi-finals, American Samoa’s Senior Boys Kevin Maukoloa was first defeated by Amami Sakano of the Northern Mariana Islands (NMI) 4-6, 6-7(7) and then Maukoloa was downed by Manoa Desvignes 2-6, 3-6.
Maukoloa then played Michael Emery of Tahiti for the 3rd and 4th overall position yesterday to finish out the tournament. Before the semi-finals, Maukoloa had won four straight matches, while dropping only one set.
The other American Samoa Senior Boys player, Larry Magalasin, played against Joel Junior Benjamin of the Solomon Islands for the 5th and 6th overall finish to end the tournament. Before his match-up with Benjamin, Magalasin defeated Krishan Raju of Fiji 7-5, 6-2 and he also downed Lataisi Mwea of Kiribati 6-0, 6-1.
American Samoa’s Junior Boys Juma Vigas has had a Red Hot hand this week making it all of the way to the finals where he played Graham Mani of the Solomon Islands for the 1st and 2nd overall spot. Before the finals, Vigas defeated Gillian Osmont of Tahiti 6-4, 6-1 and Michael Ren of NMI 6-3, 6-0.
This week, Vigas won all of his five matches winning eight sets while only dropping one.
The Junior Girls Division had American Samoa’s Charity Saigiao playing Samoa’s Anasis Saipele for the 1st and 2nd overall spot yesterday in the finals. Before the showdown between these two, they both had won their three previous matches, with both of them winning all six sets not dropping any.
American Samoa’s youngest player in the tournament is Lesei Perelini who is competing in the Girls 12 & Under Division. Perelini played in the finals for the 1st and 2nd overall spot against Daisy Sipiti of Vanuatu. Before her finals showdown with Sipiti, Perelini defeated Rosalie Molbaleh of Vanuatu 6-0, 6-4. Going into the finals, Perelini had won all four of her matches, taking all eight sets.
