SUPPLEMENTAL BUDGET SUBJECT OF SENATE HEARING TOMORROW
The Administration’s second supplemental appropriation bill of $1.1 million to fund operations of the Legislature for the remainder of FY 2013 was introduced yesterday in both the Senate.
In the Senate, the bill was assigned to the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee, whose chairman Sen. Laolagi F.S. Vaeao has scheduled a hearing for tomorrow (Friday) morning.
The largest allocation of $500,000 goes to personnel costs; followed by lawmakers allowances at $260,000; electricity at $250,000 and Contractual Services with $90,000. Without the supplemental, the administration believes the Fono will face an overrun of $1.1 million when the current fiscal year ends on Sept. 30, 2013.
The House version of the bill is expected to be introduced in the House this week.
ASG WORKING ON NEW TAPUTAPU ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Department of Education director Vaitinasa Dr. Salu Hunkin-Finau told senators yesterday that ASG is working with its federal partners to build a new Taputapu Elementary School on land already identified at Fagali’i village.
The director was responding to a question from Alataua Sen. Faletagoai I. Tuiolemotu who wanted to know the status of this school, whose students have been combined with Alataua Lua Elementary School, which is now overcrowded.
Faletagoai says the government needs to get the Taputapu school project moving forward to alleviate overcrowding at Alataua Lua, which is currently the only elementary school covering the Alataua county.
Taputapu school, which was located next to the ocean in Poloa, was completely destroyed by the 2009 tsunami. Since then the government has been working with the feds to get the school built on private land located in Fagali’i village.

The governor’s nominations of Malemo L. Tausaga as director of the Department of Administrative Services and Tauolo M. Fruean as chief election officer were both introduced in the Senate this week.
Both nominations have been assigned to the Senate Government Operations Committee, whose chairman Sen. Galeai M. Tu’ufuli is working on a schedule for confirmation hearings early next week.
Nomination for Malemo, who was Budget and Planning Office director during the last four years of the Togiola Administration, was introduced in the House earlier this week. A hearing date is not yet set.
Tuaolo, a former Police Commissioner and retired Associate Judge, was approved by the House last month in a vote of 16-2.
