Samoa’s police commissioner and head of Tafaigata prison suspended
Samoa’s Police Commissioner, Lilomaiava Fou Taioalo, and an assistant commissioner who heads Tafaigata prison, Seaga Uili Lafaele, have been suspended as a commission of inquiry into conditions at the prison gets underway.
Lilomaiava told local media the decision to suspend them followed a cabinet meeting on Wednesday.
He says a letter by a former female prison officer detailing allegations of corruption and abuse of power at the prison is the main reason for their suspension.
A government statement last night said the pair have been suspended for four months on full pay while the inquiry, led by the Ombudsman’s office, begins.
