Local business family steps up to help schools
A local businessman and his family have donated $20,000 worth of paint to the local Department of Education, which is teaming up with different government departments and agencies under the Adopt-a-School initiative to restore and repair school facilities around the territory.
The start of the 2013-2014 school year has been pushed back another week to next Monday, August 26 after site visitations on Sunday revealed that many of the schools still needed additional work. Inspections conducted by the Department of Health a couple of weeks ago revealed unsanitary conditions in the classrooms, bathroom facilities, and cafeterias, causing 10 out of 30 public schools to be cited.
Yesterday's generous donation came from Tony Grey, owner of LaTone's Car Rental in Fagaalu.
Amy Blizzard, special assistant to DOE Director Vaitinasa Dr. Salu Hunkin Finau told the Samoa News yesterday that the donation was made known to their office last Friday but nothing could be done at the time because of the bad weather conditions.
Yesterday, DOE trucks picked up the paint which Blizzard said will be used to fix up the local schools, especially those that are in need of critical restoration work.
"We just want to publicly thank Mr. Grey and his family for this generous donation," Blizzard said, speaking on behalf of the DOE director and the entire department. "We are very grateful and we really appreciate this donation from the Grey family."
Blizzard added, "We are grateful for the community's support, especially families like the Greys, as we work together to fix the school facilities for our kids."
