23 UHTTAP GRADUATES ‘GIVE BACK’ AT BOYS AND GIRLS CLUBS

The Territorial Teacher Training Assistance Program (TTTAP) —frequently referred to as the Cohort Program— asks that teachers become not only knowledgeable and effective in the teaching profession, but also caring. In order to encourage and highlight this trait of the teaching profession with Cohort teachers, they are asked to provide free service within the community as a way to give back.

The Summer graduates of 2013 decided to provide this service to the Boys and Girls Clubs of American Samoa (BGCAS) from June 10 to July 5, 2013.

Thompson explained that over the four week period allocated for this community service, teachers worked closely with youth ages 6 to 18 mentoring and providing guided instruction utilizing skills and strategies gained from their courses in the UH program.

“This is a very energetic and driven group of teachers and through their time and commitment they have gained an invaluable sense of the importance of service as they gave up their time to work with the young boys and girls at the BGCAS” said Thompson.

Lesi Sio, one of the teachers who graduated on Sunday spoke of being very grateful for the opportunity to work with these active youngsters, saying, “I am going to miss my cadet kids at the Boys and Girls Club. I hope I don’t cry saying good bye to them.”

Sio described her participation in the community service with BGCAS as “the adventure of a lifetime!”

Word of Appreciation from Graduates to BGCAS:

The Summer graduates of Cohort 26 would like to extend their biggest faafetai to Madam Chairperson Maryann Tulafono, Executive Officer Tupua Roy Fua and all of the team at the Boys and Girls Clubs of American Samoa— for opening their doors to allow the teachers the opportunity to give back to the community in a safe and clean learning environment.
