JROTC gets new instructors in lieu of competing in nationals
It was a sad day for the Tafuna Warriors Junior Reserve Office Training Corps (JROTC) Drill Team when they received the word that they will not be competing in the National Drill Competition slated for next month at Fort Knox Kentucky due to cutbacks in budget.
The sad news was delivered by JROTC Program Director Lt. Colonel Mapu Jamias who explained further to Samoa News that “Our 8th Brigade was cut $457,000 between now and September 30 along with Guam, who also will not be going to the competition. By both of us being cut from the National Drill Competition in Fort Knox Kentucky on April 1, $150,000 will be saved,”
Jamias continued, “I fully understand the situation and I would rather see three JROTC Instructor positions filled for American Samoa then spend this money on drill competition. Between now and July, if our local government can locally fund $120,000 for three new instructors, then not going to the Nationals was worth it”.
On Feb. 22, 2013, six JROTC Drill Teams from local schools, which included Fagaitua, Leone, Samoana, Kanana Fou, Manu’a and Tafuna high school competed in the Island Wide Drill Team Competition at the Samoana High School gymnasium.
Tafuna won the bragging rights and trophy to become champions of this year’s competition.
