VIDEO: WESTERN PACIFIC REGIONAL FISHERY MANAGEMENT COUNCIL MEETS
Chairman of WPRFM Council, Arnold Pelacios, during the traditional Samoan ava ceremony, held yesterday morning in the Fale Samoa at the Su’igaula Park. The welcoming ceremony was held for the participants in the 156th Council Meeting of the Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management hosted by American Samoa. The meeting began yesterday and a live Webcast of the meeting is available at http://www.ustream.tv/channel/wpcouncil.
One of the areas of interest for the territory will be the discussion on management options for the American Samoa South Pacific Albacore Fishery, as it comes at a time when local fishermen and boat owners have voiced concerns over the survival of the territory’s fisheries, noting low global prices for fish and rising costs for supplies.
The Council is responsible for providing the US Secretary of Commerce with recommendations for federally managed fisheries in Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) and the remote US Pacific Island areas.
