Renewed call on impeached CNMI governor to quit

The Northern Marianas Delegate ot the US Congress has re-iterated his call for the impeached governor Benigno Fitial to resign now.

Gregorio Kilili Sablan says the governor should just step down to save everyone the trouble, rather than go through a trial in the Senate, which may be weeks away.

Earlier this week, Mr Fitial was charged with 18 counts of corruption, felony and neglect of duty in a sitting of the House of Representatives.

If at least six of the nine Senators convict him on at least one of the 18 charges, he will be removed from office and the Lieutenant Governor Eloy Inos will become governor.

Mr Fitial has become the first governor of a US insular territory to be impeached
