Former customs officers in Samoa to serve jail sentence for theft

Two former customs officers in Samoa, have been sentenced to eighteen months each in prison after admitting to charges relating to stealing more than half a million US dollars in April.

The court had set a sentence of three and half years but reduced that to 18 months, taking into account mitigating factors such as the defendants’ early guilty plea, their ages and the fact that they are first offenders.

The police recovered most of the stolen money but the pair, Eneliko Tui and Amosa La’autalatala Fe’ausi, had spent just over one thousand dollars in cash.

The defense lawyer, Leota Raymond Schuster, told the court the defendants stole the money to make trouble for the Ministry of Revenue CEO.
