High wind warning issued
The NOAA Weather Service in Pago Pago issued at 9:42 this morning, Jan. 29, 2013, a high wind warning for all the islands of American Samoa in effect until 6 PM this evening.
Strong winds have developed to the northwest of Tutuila. These strong winds will move toward American Samoa around noon today.
High winds may lift loose objects and damage weak and light structures. Wind gusts will be strongest along slopes and through mountain passes and gaps.
The weather service says to expect sustained northwest winds of 30 to 40 mph with gusts near 60 mph.
The weather service cautions that a high wind warning means a hazardous high wind event is expected or occurring. Sustained wind speeds of at least 40 mph or gusts of 58 mph or more can lead to property damage.
