“RHETORIC WILL NOT REPAIR THE ROADS”

ShareThis

Dear Editor:

We drivers have had to put up with these rapidly deteriorating road conditions for months now and watching drivers getting more short-tempered each day. The situation needs to be addressed now, weather permitting.

The Governor asking his new Director of Public Works to present a road maintenance plan to him is asking the very people who caused this mess to come up with a solution. Public Works has not had a road maintenance plan for the past 20 years. In addition, Public Works does not have any money, materials, or equipment to repair the roads they wrecked by failing to properly carry out their responsibilities.

Right now they couldn't fill these craters and potholes with air!

The FONO's answer is to call a hearing with — who else, Public Works. That’s not the answer. Rhetoric will not repair these roads. The FONO needs to re-program funds from somewhere in the government’s nearly one-half billion dollar budget for emergency repairs to our roads. The government needs to take these funds and give out a contract to a reliable contractor and get the job done.

Speaking of contractors, if the Airport road is being held up by them, crack down on them. But, rumor has it that Public Works is the culprit over paperwork. The weather is horrible but we need help right now, not with plans and hearings but with real action!
