Speaker Savali shuts down opposition — Faipule 7

Says working with opposition appeared to show no signs of togetherness
blue@samoanews.com

The first day of the regular session in the House of Representatives for the 33rdLegislature lasted less than an hour and was pretty quiet, as the official list of standing committee members was distributed to the 19 lawmakers who were present.

Altogether, there are 13 committees, each chaired by a different faipule and does not include any of the 7 lawmakers who voted against House Speaker Savali Talavou Ale when he ran against Ituau Rep. Taotasi Archie Soliai for the House Speaker post earlier this month. (Savali won with a vote of 13-7).

The way the committees were selected was expected, but it also stunned some onlookers. It was certain that none of the opposing lawmakers were going to get any committee chairmanship positions but there was a belief that the opposing lawmakers would are least going to be granted membership status, as was the case, but for two exceptions during the previous Legislature.

During yesterday’s session, Rep. Taotasi referred to the lopsided committee selections and suggested that the Speaker reconsider. Taotasi noted that he and the other 6 lawmakers who weren’t selected to any of the committees are elected officials who represent voters from different districts in the territory, people who need and deserve a voice in the Fono.

Savali replied that this isn’t the first, second, or third year that he has had to work with some of these veteran lawmakers, and during that time, there has always been opposition against him. And while these same faipule were granted membership to some of the committees in the past, none of the results, to him, appeared to show any signs of togetherness. He told Taotasi to leave his request with him but in the meantime, let him fulfill his role as House leader.

Those lawmakers whose names were not on the list for chairmanship posts, let alone membership on any committee are: Rep. Taotasi Archie Soliai, Rep. Pulelei’ite Li’amatua Tufele Jr., Rep. Larry Sanitoa, Rep. Vaamua Henry Sesepasara,  Rep. Lemapu Talo, Rep. Vailoata Amituana’i, and Rep. Toeaina Faufano.

Four of the thirteen committees are chaired by first-time lawmakers, including the powerful Budget and Appropriations Committee, chaired by Rep. Timusa Tini Lam Yuen. Other newcomers who have chairmanship roles are Rep. Florence Vaili Saulo for the Legal Affairs/Judiciary Committee, Rep. Fatulegae’e Mauga for the Ways and Means Committee, and Rep. Talaimatai Elisara Su’a for the Port Administration/Transportation Committee.
