ASHSAA Girl’s Varsity Volleyball Semi-Finals begin today
The Semi-Finals are set for today with top four teams in this year’s American Samoa High School Athletic Association (ASHSAA) Girls Varsity League.
Today, with a scheduled starting time of 4:30 p.m., the #1 seeded Tafuna Warriors will be taking on the #4 seeded defending ASHSAA girls Varsity volleyball champion the Samoana Sharks at Tafuna High School. In the other Semi-Final game today to be played at Leone High School, the home of the Lions, the #2 seeded Lions will host the #3 seeded Faga’itua Vikings.
In this past Monday’s Quarter-Final games, the Vikings were able to defeat the #6 seeded Kanana Fou Stallions in two sets, 25-15 and 25-18 to advance to today’s Semi-Finals. The Vikings were victorious in their last five regular season games, with their last regular season win against the Lions, making it six straight wins for the Vikings counting the Quarter-Final win on Monday. In the other Quarter-Final game on Monday, the defending champion Samoana Sharks, downed the #5 seeded Fa’asao Marist Cougars in two close sets, 25-23 and 27-25 to advance to today’s Semi-Finals match up against the Warriors.
The Sharks were in the same spot last season seeded in the #4 spot when they were able to pull off upset victories over the then #1 seeded Lions in the Semi-Finals and #2 seeded Warriors in the championship title match up to win the ASHSAA Varsity 2011-12 championship trophy. Are the Sharks going to be able to repeat the same feat as last season and pull off upsets, or are the Warriors going to keep their unblemished record alive and advance to the finals?
The #2 seeded Lions dropped their last two regular season games with the first one being to the Warriors and the other to the Vikings, leaving the #1 seeded spot open to the Warriors and dropping the Lions to the #2 spot. Can the Lions get back to where they were when they won their first seven games of the season, or is the East Side team from Faga’itua going to win their seventh match in a row?
The championship game will be played this coming Friday Nov. 30th at the home court of the highest seeded team.
ASHSAA volleyball coordinator Tumua Matu’u would like to invite the public out to these games in support of ASHSAA sports and its athletes. She would also like to congratulate this year’s ASHSAA Junior Varsity Girls Volleyball Champions, the Faga’itua Vikings who earned this year’s ASHSAA Junior Varsity Girls Volleyball Championship Title.
