Samoa doctor remanded in custody

Medical practitioner, Le Mamea Dr. Emosi Puni has been remanded in Police custody until 12 December.

Dr Puni was scheduled for sentencing yesterday before Justice Pierre Slicer in the Supreme Court. This followed the Court of Appeal’s decision to dismiss an appeal by the former head of Medcen Hospital against his conviction.

Earlier this year, Dr Puni was convicted of indecent assault.

He appealed the decision.

Last Friday, Court of Appeal judges, Justice Fisher, Justice Hammond and Justice Salmon rejected the appeal.

Yesterday, Dr Puni’s lawyer, Tagaloa Enoka Puni, sought an adjournment.

Tagaloa asked the Court for the matter to be heard after 11 December 2012 because of a meeting he had to attend in Vanuatu.

He insisted that he wanted to makea closing submission in relation to the case.

In response, Justice Slicer granted Tagaloa’s request. But her ordered DrPunito be remanded in custody until the day of sentencing.
