The Common Core Awareness Conference began yesterday at the Army Reserve Center in Tafuna, and is being conducted by the ASDOE Common Core Committee.

According to a proclamation signed by Gov. Togiola Tulafono, Executive Order No. 005- 2012 orders the adoption of the common core state standards and implementation of these educational standards by the American Samoa Department of Education.

The conference, to be held over a period of three days, is for elementary and high school (private and govn’t) teachers, counselors and administrators.

It officially introduces the standards and their implementation to the territory’s schools, which includes providing “teachers and parents with consistent standards with appropriate benchmarks…” and is the basis of the curriculums in the schools.
