PTK Holiday Toy Drive now underway
The American Samoa Community College (ASCC) chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) honor society currently has a Toy Drive underway to collect items to brighten the holiday spirit for children in the Pediatric Ward of LBJ Hospital and at Hope House/Fatuoaiga.
“PTK does this because it is one of four pillars we took an oath to uphold — leadership, scholarship, fellowship, and service,” said PTK President Marietta Lafaele. “This is our service to the people and children of American Samoa. It feels good to give something, even if it’s just toys during the holiday season.”
Anyone wishing to donate a new toy or a used one in good condition can find the PTK at Laufou Shopping Center in front of Blue Sky between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. from now until Tuesday, November 20th. “We’re looking for toys that are safe for the children,” said Lafaele.
“Used toys are acceptable as long as they’re safe and in reasonable condition. We also welcome monetary donations.” Lafaele estimates that between the Pediatrics Ward and LBJ there are around 60 children for whom the PTK hopes they can provide toys. “We want to collect as many as we can,” she said. “If we end up with more than we need, we can use the remainder at different times of the year, because different children come and go from both locations.”
The PTK will also have a drop-off station on the ASCC campus for students and staff who wish to make a contribution. The honor society held its first toy drive last year at this time, and the results have encouraged them to make this an annual event. “We have received great support from everyone at ASCC and from the community, and we hope they’ll get in the holiday spirit again this year. If any of the local businesses or organizations would also like to become official sponsors of this event, we would be happy to work with them.”
A longstanding entity at ASCC, the PTK honors outstanding academic performance among its members. It is linked with the nationwide PTK organization, which provides scholarships annually to qualifying students. Each member is automatically nominated for inclusion in the prestigious National Dean’s List, and is also enrolled in the PTK Transfer Database, which links senior institutions across the nation offering scholarships to PTK members.
