The International Tennis Federation (ITF) East Pacific Qualifying 2012 Tournament for Junior Tennis players from American Samoa, Samoa and Tonga, in three different age categories, completed their first day of competition, on Monday — which included the opening ceremony.

Players are competing for a spot next month in the Pacific Oceania Junior Championships (POJC) that will be taking place in Fiji from August 6-10. The top two male and female players from each age group in this tournament, which will be a total of 12 players, will be representing the East Pacific in Fiji.

Despite the rain on opening day, spirits were not dampened as play started, with each competitor anxious to showcase their tennis skills, trying their best to earn that POJC spot.

Samoa News had a chance to speak with the visiting Head Coach of the Junior National Tennis Team of Tonga, Iasinito Hausia, who is here with 14 of his players.

“It is a great honor to be here in American Samoa with my team to be competing in this competition,” said Hausia. “I have six players in the Twelve and Under division that are competing for the first time in international competition. I am very happy for these new kids in accomplishing what they did here. We are very, very happy that we came to American Samoa. Even though getting the fares and all that we needed in Tonga for this trip was a difficult process, we still wanted to bring at least fourteen kids. I am hoping that some of my kids will qualify for the POJC in Fiji. No matter what happens, it has been great being here,” he said.

The finals for the singles will take place tomorrow, while the doubles will all take place on Friday.
