Local Track and Field athletes exposed to “high level competition”
American Samoa was represented by five Track and Field athletes June 27-29 at the Track and Field Oceania Regional Championships held at Barlow Park in Cairns, Australia.
The athletes were Alexandra Morgan, Alexarae Toeaina, Claire Morgan, Elama Faatonu and Pele Seigafo with Coach Clayton ‘Boom’ Mahuka along with Assistant and Team Manager Ruth Mahuka guiding the athletes as they competed at the Oceania Regional Championship in Cairns, Australia.
“Cairns gave our athletes exposure to high level competition and this is a real benefit for our program in American Samoa,” said Mahuka. “I was impressed with how our athletes handled themselves as they developed bonds with athletes from other federations. As far as how they performed, our runners improved from times set before they left the island”.
“We still have a lot of work to do and the field event athletes did us proud. Elama Faatonu will be representing us in Barcelona, Spain, then in London for the 100 meters and we wish him the best,” said Mahuka.
