Search to resume for sailors missing in Tongan waters

A search for two yachtsmen missing in Tongan waters will resume today.

New Zealand’s Rescue Co-ordination Centre is overseeing the search for the two men in their 60s, who are from Australia and England.

Their 15 metre yacht Navillus was wrecked off the island of Late, west of Vava’u, on Thursday night.

The pair reported via a satellite phone call to a relative in Australia, that they had run aground and their Bavaria yacht was breaking up.

An emergency locator beacon was activated at the same time, about 10.30pm.

Two fishing boats and a Royal New Zealand Air Force Orion conducting the search found yesterday the boat’s hull, dinghy, an undeployed liferaft as well as a number of lifejackets and debris.
