PACIFIC PARENTS NEED TO LISTEN TO TEENAGERS MORE – STUDY
A recent study by a Samoan sociologist suggests that Pacific parents need to combine traditional views with a more modern outlook if their teenage children are to prosper.
In the study, researcher Fiva Faalau - who graduated with a PhD from Massey University last week – examined the lives of 45 Samoan teenagers along with their family structures and the style of parenting they received.
Dr Faalau concluded that Pacific parents need to balance the tradition of parental control and protectiveness with the desire of teenagers to have freedom and trust.
Dr Faalau says she reached her conclusion not just be replying on theory and academic research but also by working on the frontline with troubled families and teens.
