Tonga's royal funeral plans change

Tonga's new King Tupou VI wants his predecessor buried a day earlier than planned, throwing arrangements into turmoil.

King George Tupou V died in Hong Kong on Sunday and was due to be interred at the royal burial grounds on Wednesday.

But officials have told Matangi Tonga that the new king, who is with his brother's body in Hong Kong, wants a faster and cheaper service.

Political sources in Nuku'alofa say the new king is conscious that Tonga's economy is in a desperate state, verging on default.
