Samoa's circumcision man pleads not guilty

A 68-year-old man, of Sataoa, denied performing illegal circumcision on 27 boys from Saleilua, Falealili in the District Court on Tuesday afternoon.

Presided over by Judge Mata Tuatagaloa, Fale Itagia was represented by lawyer Alex Su’a.

Itagia was initially charged with 23 counts of actual bodily harm when the matter was first brought to the court early this year.

The matter was brought to the attention of Police following more than twenty young boys allegedly ending up in hospital as a result of the circumcision surgery conducted by the defendant.

Police prosecution at the time, asked for a further adjournment to finalise the charges against Itagia because they believed there would be more charges pending.
