On Soccer: Thomas Rongen makes unlikely impact with American Somoa squad
Odds were, Thomas Rongen was going to be on the job for only a month. Then again, with a little luck — make that a lot of luck — he might have been able to extend his stay as coach of the American Samoa national team a while longer.
Rongen, who coached D.C. United to the 1999 Major League Soccer championship, and had coaching stints with Tampa Bay, New England and Chivas USA in MLS, as well as two turns as U.S. Under-20 coach, knew what he was up against.
