Pele's courageous battle ends
Bernadette Marie "Pele" Scanlan Langkilde, a native of Fagatogo, American Samoa who has long fought a battle with Lou Goehrig's disease, passed away peacefully at LBJ Medical Center on Tuesday evening, November 29 with her husband and family members at her side.
For the past 16 years, Pele and her family courageously battled the disease, which kept her immobilized and on a ventilator.
The community fought right along with her, as they organized walks and drives to help the family cope with the debilitating illness - "Pele's Walk" became an annual event in the community.
Arrangements for her funeral services are pending from the family. Godspeed, Pele.
