"Much Ado About Nothing" at ASCC This Week
The Yesterday & Today's Entertainment Club (YTEC) at the American Samoa Community College (ASCC) will showcase its production of Shakespeare's play "Much Ado About Nothing" this Thursday and Friday evening, December 1st and 2nd.
Performances will take place in the ASCC Lecture Hall beginning at 6 p.m. and the public is invited and welcome to attend.
"This classic Shakespeare comedy has many elements that will keep the audience entertained," said YTEC advisor and ASCC English instructor Lawrence Wilson. "The title itself means: much fuss, or trouble, over nothing. The play is a continuous series of misunderstandings that could have been avoided if the characters would have just exercised a bit of patience, and used thought over emotion. As always, we have put a Samoan twist on the story, and the actors have done a terrific job in creating each character."
As a warm-up for the ASCC performances, the cast has road-tested the production at a local school. "We have already performed the play for Fa'asao Marist and they gave us a positive reaction," said Wilson. "I know that if the people come on Thursday and Friday they will be likewise entertained. Please come out and see these wonderful actors perform."
Wilson credits the production's lead actor, Tingey Purcell, and actress, Iris Hirata, for going "above and beyond" in their efforts to bring their characters to life. Both Purcell and Hirata have also received the YTEC Scholarship, made possible through a donation from National Pacific Insurance, for their outstanding dedication to the play.
Each performance will begin at 6 p.m. this Thursday and Friday. Judging by previous ASCC Shakespeare productions, a high probability exists that the audience may be treated to more than just the play. In the past, the casts have often provided warm-up entertainment, although what form this takes is usually left as a surprise until showtime. The cost of admission is $5.00 for adults and $4.00 for children under 12.
Besides Purcell as Benedict and Hirata as Beatrice, the cast for "Much Ado About Nothing" includes Tunoa Sua (Don Pedro); Tim Jones (Claudio); Mariana Kaipast (Hero); Sio Tupua (Don John); Siapiu Vaovasa (Borachio); Tarcia Tuigamala (Margaret); Jake Afoa (Dogberry); Rocco Tinitali (Verges); Iosefa Siatuu (Leonato); Tiapepe Uiagalelei (Antonio); Juliam Muasau and Raylyn Lalaga (Don John's women) and Oliver Mortenson and Adam Lolofie (Guards).
