Local McD's managing director comments on new IT support

McDonald's franchise in American Samoa and Samoa is getting a boost in information technology support thanks to a new multi million dollar agreement reached this week between U.S. based Unisys Corporation and McDonald's restaurants in Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific, which includes American Samoa.

In a news release this week, Unisys said its Australian and New Zealand subsidiaries will provide for McDonald's end-user IT support under the five year contract, valued at about $30.5 million for McDonald's chain of more than 1,000 company-owned and franchised restaurants across Australia, New Zealand, New Caledonia, Fiji, Tahiti, American Samoa and Samoa.

Responding to Samoa News inquiries, Lawrence Yance - the Managing Director for McDonald's American Samoa and Samoa - said that under this agreement, Unisys "will provide 24/7 IT support for all of the technology used in a McDonald's restaurant, including point of sale devices, back-office PC equipment, peripherals, wireless networks, customer order display units and cameras."

"This is important because reliable in-store technology is critical to providing a quality experience," Yance said yesterday. He also said that the transition to Unisys begins in February 2012 and is due to be completed by the end of March.

Asked if new jobs will be created under this project, Yance said here will be no change to the number of jobs at the local franchises as a result of this deal. Currently, there are a total of 258 McDonald's employees in American Samoa and Samoa.

Henry Shiner, an official with McDonald's Australia that oversees the South Pacific region says customers are at the heart of McDonald's business, and reliable in-store technology is critical to providing a quality experience from the moment a customer places an order until the meal is delivered.

"Our goal is to enable franchisees and restaurant managers to run their business so they can deliver the convenient, dependable and consistent service our customers expect whenever they walk into one of our restaurants," he said in a joint news release with Unisys.
