Lions Park Tennis Vets Club beats Chanel
The American Samoa Lions Park Veterans Tennis Club wrestled the championship trophy from the visiting Chanel vets tennis club from Moamoa, Apia when they met last weekend at the Tafuna Tennis Courts for two days of competition.
Because of bad weather, only 28 matches were completed on Friday, 25th and Saturday, 26th. The local vets club won 16 of those matches while Chanel took 12 of them.
The Lions Park veterans beat the Chanel players seven matches to four in the women's category and triumphed over their traveling opponents three matches to one in the mixed doubles tournament. Chanel edged the Lions Park seven victories to six in the men's doubles group.
The Chanel squad of close to 20 players was led by its president, Galumalemana Steve Percival while Herman Popeye Thomsen, president of the local vets club skippered his team. Philo Jennings was the tournament director while Iosia skippered the side from Samoa. He was also the visiting team's spokesman.
The most shocking result in the two-day tournament was the match between Rev. Usufono and partner Edwina from Chanel who thrashed and embarrassed two of the top players in American Samoa, Lolo Auala and Larry Magalasin in a 9-1 victory in the men's doubles bracket. The winners won the lopsided match award.
Chanel will host the Lions Park veterans club next February at its headquarter in Moamoa, Samoa in the second leg of the inter club so'o. Then on June next year, the Chanel veterans club will host the Oceania Veterans tennis competition to coincide with Samoa's 50th anniversary since it became the first South Pacific nation to gain full independence from its colonial administration, New Zealand.
It will also mark the 50th year since the establishment of the Marist Fathers run Chanel College in Moamoa.
President Galumalemana thanked the Lion Park veterans club for the wonderful reception they received for two days and promised to reciprocate the fa'aalo'alo when his Chanel club hosts the so'o next year.
Local president, Tonumaipe'a wished the Apia based players a safe journey home. The group left on Sunday afternoon after a big to'ana'i on Sunday at the American Samoa Tennis Association's building in Tafuna.
A prize giving ceremony was held last Saturday night at the ASTA building where prizes were awarded. President Tonumaipe'a Herman Popeye Thomsen and secretary, Tai Duseigneur would like would to thank the many sponsors who generously donated to make the two day tournament between the two clubs a memorable and successful event.
