jeff@samoanews.com

The American Samoa High School Athletic Association (ASHSAA) boys basketball season is underway now, with intense practices at the Varsity and Junior Varsity levels at eight high schools that are suiting Varsity teams, while only six of those schools will be putting Junior Varsity squads on the court. Leone, Tafuna, Fa’asao Marist, Samoana, Fagaitua and Nu’uuli VocTech high schools will all have Varsity and Junior Varsity in play, while South Pacific Academy and  Manumalo will have Varsity only.

In last year’s 2010-2011 season, the Tafuna Warriors were able to defeat the Leone Lions in the Varsity division Championship title game, by a score of 60-45. In Junior Varsity division, the Samoana Sharks downed the Tafuna Warriors 43-37 to take the Junior Varsity Championship title.

New to the ASHSAA basketball scene are the South Pacific Academy Dolphins, who along with the Manumalo Baptist Academy Flames, will be suiting only Varsity squads this year, with this being the Flames second year in ASHSAA basketball.

The coordinator for the ASHSAA boys basketball, Valusia Talataina, would like to invite the public out to all of the basketball games in support of ASHSAA basketball. “All of the players and coaches are working hard at this time to have great and competitive games. I wish all of the teams the best of luck,” said Talataina.
