  • AFOA AND LE'I OFFICIALLY ENTER 2012 GUBERNATORIAL RACE   2 years 35 weeks ago

This guy in the last election really showed his true colors... Talking about change and this and that about the Togiola administration and how they messed things up. As soon as he was out of the race everyone thought he would throw his support to Utu to bring about that change.
What does he do? He sides with Togiola and endorses him. Why? Because he didn't really want change in the first place, he just wanted his turn to stick his hand into the cookie jar and since he was out, the only way was to cut a deal with the devil.
The man is a sellout for his own personal gain. Come on man 3 failed attempts... that's strike 3 already, give it up, you're a joke. Now excuse me I have to go... I'm about to throw up from this news...

First of all, for the Public Defender to be Mr. Masaniai's sister in law, she would have to be married to his brother, which I do not believe is the case. Secondly, whether or not she is, is irrelevant.
The vehicle and other items were not given to his family or "aiga." They were not stolen, embezzled, sold or taken home for personal use. They were transferred to the Public Defender's Office, which is underfunded and has stated that the vehicle and other items have been very useful to them in their official government duties.
Thirdly, since the ASG Office of Property Management was informed of, aware of and approved of this transfer, this is hardly a "conspiracy" by Moi, Special Agents of the Department of Justice or anyone else, especially since neither the vehicle nor any of the other items were, as indicated above, stolen, embezzled, sold or taken home for personal use.
They were publicly transferred. Why don't you admit that your comments above are merely part of the ongoing vendetta that you and/or the Attorney General have against Mr. Masaniai because you or someone in your family or someone you know were or are being prosecuted or are in the sights of being prosecuted by the Independent Prosecutor's Office? Why don't you do this before you write yet other inane and utterly unsubstantiated comments such as these above?

Now compared to what Moi is doing to some of the real crooks have been doing such activity for years! It is nothing what Moi is doing here than the old thieves have been doing, compared to $ millions of dollar the real thieves have finagled from government funds.
All what you mention herein about Moi, it didn't matter. But what matter the most.....Are those behind the curtain still filching funds literally, probably including the two of you been attacking Moi for being jealous of his promotion, working with the FBI.
Find someone to take care of your family, when the FBI investigations will be done. I foresee what the outcome will be like after all is done scrutinized, and investigated.
Don't get no heart attack yet, hope not, go to church every day now, 24/7 and see if that works.
If not run away and hide in some foreign country so the FBI can't find you.....Ummm ha haaa. Run, but can't hide, and don't forget that. It is part of the FBI menu when going after the criminals. hahaa

I definitely agree with the author.
Also, there is another big problem with this territory. It's a small piece of land and job opportunity is crap. So, firing a person can be a delicate issue.
Second, this place is full of nepotism (family "favortism) at its worst and extreme. Get rid of it. If you can't get rid of nepotism to some extent, this island won't grow and no matter what kind of law is made, it's going to be ignored from top to bottom of the leadership ladder. Kick it out of the culture.
Lastly, slowly but reasonably increase the price of hospital fees. That should provide a constant wake up call for everyone on the island.
Basically, this island's leadership is full of crap, just want to eat, favor people who lack skills, and is moving backwards instead of forward in the current century.
    God bless freedom of speech.

  • AFOA AND LE'I OFFICIALLY ENTER 2012 GUBERNATORIAL RACE   2 years 35 weeks ago

It doesn't hurt to give it another try, and it's worth taking the risk than sitting back and watch. Let's see what the voting population thinks of this new team, whether it would give a good showing or it would be just another team in the race for the top spot in ASG leadership.
Well, it's now four teams and there is word in the wind that there might be another team announcing soooon. This year's election will be a very, very interesting one, especially it's lame duck and the lt. governor has a lot of tracks to cover as he tries to rehash his credibility and convince the voters.
May the best team win, but of course that really does not apply here, ya all know where I'm going with this! lol

  • AFOA AND LE'I OFFICIALLY ENTER 2012 GUBERNATORIAL RACE   2 years 35 weeks ago

Oh NO! I can't believe Afoa does not remember 2008 when he had the chance to cast the deciding vote of the run-off election.

Let's see... If Afoa made the correct decision in 2008, maybe AS would not be in this mess. The same government he's complaining about in this article, was the one he sided with in 2008.

He said, "I believe I can make a difference."... well, in 2008 all of American Samoa counted on you to make a difference, but you failed us. "Character is important"... well in 2008 you really showed your character, and of all the things you said about the "bad" government, you sided with the current administration when AS really needed you.

Sorry, but i have respect for you as an elder, but sorry no vote from this voter or any of his friends and families.

  • “BY THE LAW OF INSANE ‘FREE’ MEDICAL CARE”   2 years 35 weeks ago

I appreciate your comments; you're correct in that I looked at the "macro" part of things. And that's as far as I could go to help LBJ- pressuring the political leaders of the territory to meet their legal and financial obligations to LBJ and the people's health care. If I can do more, I will.

It seems to me the board was in some sort of disarray as the only person who seems to be the board in the past 5 months when this fiasco came to the fore was Moananu (the time,it appears, the alleged hiring and raises took place). Now that the governor has put forth his nominations to fill the vacant slots, and with the senate confirmation, the board should be back in business. And there (the board) I believe should be the body to look into these management activities and make the necessary changes.

If you're an LBJ employee, there's also the grievance process available to you and fellow employees who may be affected by the alleged management decisions. You also have your Fono representatives to your disposal. Unfortunately, they need to be nudged now and then to do their jobs; but they are there to serve you. That's their purpose.

I am hopeful that things will turn for the better.

    Best.

  • DHR director: Calls ASDOE hiring process “multi-faceted and complex”   2 years 35 weeks ago

Youre doing a great job Director. Dont let these haters get to you. The system has been broken long ago, and i commend you for your hard work in trying to get things back in order. As for these comments from Putz and whoever...tell me who has done better than the current Director? NO ONE! So instead of criticizing and crying about it, let me hear how u would resolve this issue...

  • AG's office on the hunt for IP vehicle and equipment   2 years 35 weeks ago

How can any of you defend Masaniai's latest actions and his work as the independent prosecutor and keep a straight face? He illegally transferred ASG property, including a car, to a family member's office for that family member to use. The $10 word for that is nepotism, which is closely tied to cronyism. Both of which are kinds of institutional corruption.
It is utterly ridiculous for any prosecutor with the money and other resources that Masaniai had to have one single felony conviction in two years. But it makes complete sense to me now. Masaniai was far more corrupt than the people he said he was prosecuting (but was really shaking down for personal reasons).
According to Masaniai, Marie Ripley got $250 selling a drivers license to a Tongan lady, Mike Fuiava obstructed that investigation and Vice Speaker Talia didn't get a cent from anyone, but when he was an ASG Director he gave some sick leave to a cancer stricken employee who ultimately died. Masaniai never proved a single accusation against Mrs. Ripley, Mr. Fuiava or Vice Speaker Talia. Oh yeah, and Masaniai failed to do his job and allowed the cases against employees at the AGs Office to be dismissed because the statute of limitations expired.
The dollar amount netted from the rampant corruption that Masaniai failed to clean up was $250.00. That is probably less than one of the office chairs that he illegally transferred to his sister in law. Add the computers to that, the other office equipment and the car. Moi probably gave her over $100,000 worth of stuff. But what's $100,000 of government property between family members?

What other meaalofa was Moi giving and getting during his time in the IP chair? Who was paying him on the side to delay his cases into oblivion and look the other way? I used to think he was just ineffective and incompetent because he didn't go to law school and was in way over his head. But I see now that he was highly competent and effective (moreso than Ripley, Fuiava and Talia) at turning his government job into a for-profit enterprise.

Good riddance to this unqualified, crooked, scam-artist, wannabe lawyer Faamomoi Masaniai who used to blather on from sun up to sun down about representing the people of American Samoa. All he ever represented was his own financial interests. Let that sink in everyone. You know I'm absolutely 100% right.

definitely NOT one of the lesser evils in this gubernatorial circus.

  • “FOUNDATION OF ASG BASED ON FOUR PILLARS”   2 years 35 weeks ago

I agree with you Jimmy, it would take a Governor with COMMON SENSE, unfortunately so far, we haven't been able to elect one! and to make matters worse, the ones in the race for 2012 are not qualified at all!

  • AFOA AND LE'I OFFICIALLY ENTER 2012 GUBERNATORIAL RACE   2 years 35 weeks ago

I believe this candidate in the last election wanted "change".. but in the end, after losing to UTU/NOA, he supported Togiola. Therefore wiping out all chances of CHANGE in the government and setting us back another 4 years. Who in their right state of mind would do such a thing, and now he is back in the race?

  • AG's office on the hunt for IP vehicle and equipment   2 years 35 weeks ago

So what happened to all the cases Moi was working on?
Is it safe to say that they are now under the proverbial rug?

  • ASCC: Year Around Pell Grant program discontinued   2 years 35 weeks ago

Can we actually confirm that there WILL be Summer School instead of just the ASTEP Program? I am questioning this because after all this time for at least 2-3 years, teachers have not been getting paid on time for teaching in the summer and there was no funding or subsidies afforded by ASG, and I believe and hope that Summer school will not be cancelled because there will be no money.

  • Extra 2% wage tax set for mid March   2 years 35 weeks ago

So, Congress last Friday approved federal legislation to extend the 2% payroll tax cuts (on FICA), with the goal that employees take home more money...so what this is saying is that ASG laws supersedes that of Congress??!! Right? Monarchy much? Man, whatever happened to that 'impeachment' they all talked about in the Senate? Did the Guv'na send his 'dogs' in and all of a sudden they are QUIET???!!!
What a Mickey Mouse Guv'na and Govt we have, all they do is take away from its people. Pretty soon, you will have stripped each and everyone of their dignity and respect...if NOT already!

  • Extra 2% wage tax set for mid March   2 years 35 weeks ago

Thanks to the gov. and members of the Fono for helping the people of AS concerning the hike in hospital fees and giving its employees their jobs.
Now gov. employees will pay extra tax to finance for your jobs so that you can feed your families. I want to ask the hospital CEO to review certifications for its Dental Service out in the schools. Some of these people were hired to do janitorial jobs but ended up becoming dental assistance. They also wear gloves and put their fingers in kids mouth. These people also works only 4 hours a day. They arrive at the schools at 10am and leave at 12 noon. If I am paying extra tax to fund these programs, I want to make sure my money is worth paying for. "Sorry guys I used to work at your program" I know it all.

I don't see any lights within that government whatsoever....Same, Same, old samoan confounded way of lives obviously.

They are total Oblivious type of individuals, where do they come from by the way? They don't have no conscious, but subconscious mind for real, according to how they work around the clock.

They jump in to conclusion, before they know it was the wrong thing to do as usual according to the post. Why not use their sense of imagination, if they can't contemplate what is going on? I wonder what college they've all gone too? Because it is too obvious knowing that they all graduated from the same one the leaders graduated from; The ASG University of American Samoa Government 96799. Top major subject, " Finagle Cf. Filch.

  • AG's office on the hunt for IP vehicle and equipment   2 years 35 weeks ago

This is just personal smudging on samoa news' behalf as I know there are more news worthy events, scandals, etc. other than a mis-tranfer of government equiptment (which occurs through out all ASG departments blantantly and religiously) that was trackable via a formal letter pointing in the direction of their final destination. You people are ridiculously ignorant

  • AG's office on the hunt for IP vehicle and equipment   2 years 35 weeks ago

All in the family, what substantial evidence do you have besides hearsay things? I want you to know, all in the family, that (1) hearsay things are asserted, often loosely summarized as an out of court declaration. (2) hearsay rule; the American rule of evidence under which hearsay is generally deemed "inadmissible" because the assertion presented as "truth" is usually not made under oath and is not subject to cross-examination under the scrutiny of the judge and jury.

Are you fear about what Moi Masaniai is doing? Hope you are not a victim of some kind, according to your vulnerability accusation, and defensibility attribution. Will find out sooner or later. You Can run, but you can't hide. If you don't have no substantial evidence, or legitimate points to your futile attribution, and then desist yourself from conquering such stupid arguement. Samoanews has all the right to posted anything according to the freedom of press is concern. This is my advise to you; all in the family FEUD. Have a life.

  • AG's office on the hunt for IP vehicle and equipment   2 years 35 weeks ago

Why now in 2012 question and search the whereabout of these properties??? The purchases was 2009, wake up and smell the coffee. All ASG properties are labeled and to follow up each year...reality. It seems Masaniai was free used and distributed to his discretion who to give the damn things to.
Oh well, what's new to this ASG procedure, the cost of properties could have used to hire some of our children to clerk files some work up in the AG's office, instead of buying expensive things to avail their character.

  • Extra 2% wage tax set for mid March   2 years 35 weeks ago

unfortunately, i dont think things have changed, as stated by the anonymous hospital employee. in fact, its the same as its always been for the 10 plus years ive been back on the rock. in the end the people are paying for the mistakes of our "leaders".
How nice of the governor and the fono to give a temporary fix to the problem we have at the hospital by putting it on the backs of the wage earners of american samoa. these guys did a great job of spinning our crisis at l.b.j. and deflecting the blame to the hospital board and c.e.o. so now it seems they will be our knights in shinning armor rescuing us from the evil c.e.o and his cronnies. the question still remains, why wasnt the hospital given its subsidies and whatever money it takes to operate annually?
Like any responsible household, there are priorities when handling the budget, i would think health care and eduction would be up there at the top, along with $1 million per district for willy nilly reasons. as "head(s)" of our household, i dont think they have been looking out for the "children".
in fact, our "leaders" have been acting more like drunks that blow most of their paycheck on boozing, gambling, and hanky panky, only to come home trying to come up with excuses on why the utilities wont be paid on time, or why saimin and pilikaki is on the menu six days a week.
Lucky for the "head(s)" of our houselhold, they have the "children" and an uncle sam to bail them out. so i guess we can kiss that 2% goodbye, especially with no sunset provision. look forward to more taxes to come to cover up for our "father(s)" mistakes in the future.

  • Extra 2% wage tax set for mid March   2 years 35 weeks ago

Alright, let me get this straight - the hospital is in financial woes because ASG did not give them their 3 million dollars in subsidized monies. So ASG solution to this is to get a "loan" from the Workman's Compensation Account and have the taxpayers pay for the "loan" through a 2% tax increase??
Why do WE have to pay back this "loan"? And where is the 3 million in subsidized money that LBJ never received???

    natty
