  • With fiscal responsibility holding steady as the issue poll voters find most important, which team best exemplifies this trait?   2 years 4 weeks ago

    Malo Tamaoletumua,

I see you are on this one too. You interpreted comments made by others on here and then ask to tell you how Lolo is not above any other Candidate for Governor. I still don't see why he is better than the other candidates. He hasn't convinced me yet.

What troubles me is his economic plan for American Samoa. Tapping into federal funds? Really? Did he not know the US is in debt? That States and Cities in the US are going through debt crises? We already receive funds from the US, how are we to use those funds to develop OUR economy is the question. Plus, my interpretation from the 3rd version of the 'draft report', turned 'internal memo', he has more love for his girlfriend/siblings than his wife (?) LOL. I'm just kidding.

I see that you have provided labels for some of the candidates. What about Faoa and Taufete'e? I'm just asking. I also wanted to add a label for Lolo, how about Lolo McLovin (Love for some people first and then the rest). Maguia le aso.

  • ASESRO staff denies there is a 1602 ‘draft report’ — instead calling it an ‘internal memo’   2 years 4 weeks ago

    Talofa i lau Susuga Tamaoletumua,

I'm not oblivious, just wanted to see how is it that after a third revision of the "draft report", turned "internal memo", would include information on Lolo's girlfriend and siblings, among other instances of conflict. Tarnishing someone's character? I think not. I agree with you on the "Samoans love to smile in your face, and stab you in the back".

moe moe le vale, nofo i luga , aue.......o le masina Setema, 2012

Will somebody whisper to the man that has been sleeping, that the year is 2012, the month is September and the day is the 17th. Election is on November 6, 2012. What country decides to place an issue of this magnitude on a ballot 6 weeks before the election?? By the time you send your letter it will be six fricken weeks before the election. The issue is a very critical issue and a few of your thoughts are good, Mr. Togiola. But do you seriously think that we should act NOW, on your immediate whim? You would like for 18000 voters to jump up now and decide whether our Senators should be elected? Where in the jungle were you during the Constitutional Convention? You've changed your position on this issue, and we need to vote to validate your opinion?

Plan to write a memoir and include all of your wishful thinking of what you should have done, could have done and did not do during your 10 years as Governor. And you want respect for your high title......peleeze go back to sleep.

  • WHY ARE MOST TERRITORIAL FLAGS STILL FLYING HIGH?   2 years 4 weeks ago

I agree with Paulo. It's the High Hitler Leader who hasn't yet decided which Flag to honor. The USA/American Samoa Flag or the Samoa Flag. As a result mixed signals are sent from the Governor's Office to the Govt. agencies. And that is why there are still potholes on the road. Mixed signals.......in government.

hmmmm....is that your BEST argument against Afoa? Please stop making excuses to justify your actions. If you are opting for WHOEVER in the upcoming gubernatorial race, then GOOD FOR YOU! But to disregard someone based on factors that are beyond their control is absurd.

Talking about Mr. Sanchez...why have you not responded to ANY of the GOOD things samoanews have been reporting about him and the shipyard? Are you even aware of it, or have you just completely disregarded facts in fear of shattering your own assumptions?

Braddah...need to stop being in denial about the time and effort of another individual that is more successful than you! Because "change" will NEVER occur if people like you continue to "hate" on others successes, rather than doing something to improve yourself and society as a whole.

  • With fiscal responsibility holding steady as the issue poll voters find most important, which team best exemplifies this trait?   2 years 5 weeks ago

Thank you Tamaoletumua for your opinion...let's see you running for Governor! I'd truly be ENTERTAINED in seeing how much "brains" and "heart" you have. Let alone SUFFICIENT knowledge to run the government.

Remember what the Bible says about casting the first stone...

  • With fiscal responsibility holding steady as the issue poll voters find most important, which team best exemplifies this trait?   2 years 5 weeks ago

It is obvious from your COMMENT that LOLO is YOUR decision for Governor. Hence, can you honestly keep an open mind when another person takes the time to go through ANY details about why ANY OTHER candidate is BETTER? Very doubtful...but just asking.

  • With fiscal responsibility holding steady as the issue poll voters find most important, which team best exemplifies this trait?   2 years 5 weeks ago

There are a few things I find interesting from your comment:

    1. In reading your opening paragraph, you state that Afoa is a lawyer but not a "businessman or money manager"...Can you please clarify? The logic of your "OPINION" is a bit off. If he wasn't a businessman or money manager, how is he then very successful?...am a bit confused....because shortly after this statement, you conflict yourself in the end of the paragraph with, "Lawyers MAKE MONEY on the conflicts and hardships of others"...

    2. From the previous quote, could I ask you to keep an open mind, as this is a stereotype of lawyers and a generalization of EVERY lawyer that roams the face of the earth? How about I offer you a different perspective? There are lawyers that do NOT bank on conflicts and hardships of others...they actually work REALLY hard to ensure that citizens or residents are given due process, and are represented fairly, because we do live in a democratic society where everyone is innocent unless proven otherwise. So, who best to FIGHT for these individuals, especially the innocent? As a matter of fact, there are so many lawyers that were inspired to go into law, because someone or a place they care about have been misjudged, mistreated, etc...by others in power and authority.

    3. Now going into your second paragraph...WOW, your paradigm of Afoa is pretty skewed towards the negative. How about I offer you the REALITY of why he continues to run? Unlike so many people that continue to complain about how things are and how they should be...he is ONE of the few individuals that believe he has the responsibility to do something about it. He truly believes, and he is passionate, that the only time he has left on this earth is to serve his people. He believes in the potential of our Samoans to do great things for themselves and for each other, because that is the core of why we take pride in our Fa'aSamoa and embrace the concept of community and family.

    4. Furthermore, I do wish you are not a parent, an uncle/aunt, sibling, etc...because I feel sorry for anyone that comes to you for support in the pursuant of their dreams and passion...because all they would get from you, after ANY failed attempts, is a cold shoulder...kalofa e....maybe you can learn from Michael Jordan here regarding failure: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPFOlXo7UPI
As a matter of fact, bringing it closer to the political arena, do some research on one of THE BEST U.S. President's: Abraham Lincoln...he is known for his persistence and NEVER QUITTING, you'd be amazed by the amount of failed attempts he endured, but it NEVER STOPPED him from PURSUING his DREAMS.

    5. I respect your decision to support Jones, it is your RIGHT in a democratic government...and TRUST ME...I know him and his fishing boat all too well, which is why I would never choose him to lead our people!...of course that is my HUMBLE opinion

Good Luck to you and your candidate!

it is about time to make changes, let us not have different clowns with the same show, and i strongly beleive it is about time to change the show. Jones and Tuika would be the best to do the changes for us...most of the candidates running for governor and lt.governor are high chiefs of their villages and we all know here in Samoa it is who you know but not what you know, people are jumping through windows but not walking through doors and we are afraid to voice out our thoughts.why? because matai rule over villages and they are the ones that gives out decisions to who ever doesnt abide the village rules...and samoan matais are being sold by 20 dollars just to not do what is right and that is corruptions that are goin on now.....all for jones and tuika "o fear"

  • Gov says let voters decide how senators are selected   2 years 5 weeks ago

Selecting senators by their counties was the intention of our forefathers so we can keep our traditions, customs and our land to the true owners of Tutuila and Manua. It is the duties of these paramount chiefs from each counties to uphold the traditions and customs of Tutuila and Manua and to take care of their counties. This is the last straw of our FAASAMOA that is left before we let the American way control our land, people and our customs.

If we want to be like Guam and Hawaii then let the senators be elected, but if we want to hold on to our land, traditions and customs then let the county matais select their senators. That is not discriminatory it was the agreement between the USA and our forefathers. They knew what they were doing back then and they were looking after the good and welfare of the people of Tutuila and Manua.

  • Gov says let voters decide how senators are selected   2 years 5 weeks ago

Someone made a comment before that we should maintain the system that we have now of Counties Matais to elect a Senator from each Countie because its what our FOREFATHER has ESTABLISHED.

For this persons info, this is not the system (FAAVAE) that our Forefather established for Tutuila and Manua.

OLE FAAVAE O TUTUILA MA MANUA SA TUUMAI E TATOU TUA'A UA FAI I LAGI LATOU FOLAUGA, NA O "TAMALII MA MAOPU E O'O ILE SENETOA" E LEAI NE TULAFALE PO O NI TOFA. AE UA NONOFO LE FONO MA SUI LE FAAVAE SA OLA MAI AI TUTUILA MA MANUA. TAGAI FOI OUTOU I TAGATA O LE FONO LIA E FAATUIESE, E IAI LE TOFA IA VELEGA, LUALEMANA, GALEAI, GAOTEOTE O TULAFALE I LATOU (O FOFOGA FETALAI O ITUMALO)E LE TATAU O NA I AI LATOU I LE FONO, (PE A TATOU FOI I LE FAAVAE NA TUU'UA E TATOU TUA'A "ONLY TAMALIIS ARE ELECTED TO SENATOR"

THIS IS THE REASON WHY OUR FOREFATHER SAID THAT ONLY TAMALII/MAOPU IN THE SENATOR, BECAUSE A TAMALII SUPOSE TO BE A CALM AND RESPECTFUL LEADER NOT DISREPECTFUL LIKE SENATOR VELEGA.

I WOULD LIKE TO VOTE FOR MY SENATOR FOR THE ITUAU COUNTY SO I'LL KNOW THAT THE PERSON I VOTE FOR KNOWS THE ISSUES IN MY COUNTY AND UNDERSTAND THE ISSUES FOR THE BETTERMENT OF TUTUILA AND MANUA, NOT BECAUSE "OK LEVU ITS YOUR TURN CAUSE SEUI IS GONE (WITH ALL RESPECT TO THE LATE TOFA IA SEUI) AND HURRY-UP BECAUSE ITS FAGASA'S TURN NEXT.

THE BOTTOM LINE IS, TUTUILA AND MANUA SHOULD VOTE FOR THE SENAT SEAT AND TAMALII,MAOPU ONLY AS OUR FOREFATHER LEFT FOR ALL OF US, SENATORS THAT ARE AGAINEST THE PUBLIC VOTE ARE SCARED BECAUSE THEY KNOW NO ONE WILL VOTE THEM BACK IN.

SPEAK UP TUTUILA AND MANUA LET YOUS VOICE HEARD, IF ITS "YES" THAN ITS OK, IF ITS "NO" THAN ITS OK TOO
THEN WE ALL MOVE-ON AND SUPPORT THE WINNING ANSWER AND MAKE TUTUILA AND MANUA THE BEST PLACE TO LIVE AND RAISE OUR FAMILIES. THATS THE BEAUTY OF DEMOCRACY.

GOD BLESS AMERICA, TUTUILA AND MANUA, SAMOA AND OUR PEOPLE.

  • Gov says let voters decide how senators are selected   2 years 5 weeks ago

It is time for us to move forward with time if we want to improve the life and the welfare of our people. All these arguements from the Chiefs sitting in today's Senate are just as hollow as the walls they are looking at. Gone were the days of wisdom and deep forcast from our forefathers that some of us that are not senators have it. So, lets vote in the senators

  • With fiscal responsibility holding steady as the issue poll voters find most important, which team best exemplifies this trait?   2 years 5 weeks ago

I'm 100% for Jones for Governor, do you like to know why? He is not a High Chief that you I mean, ALL OF YOU fakely address and fakely respect as a Matai. I can communicate with them on in any level for what to do and get em fix for our gov't and people. Enough on that faaaloalo issue it does not fix pot holes and all other corruption like "si au mea sia CHIEF"!!!!!

!!!!!!!! FINALLY, HE IS A PALAGI!! Born and raised in AMERICA!!! Now, Tuika on the other hand, he's very well versed with all the wrong doings in those department that controls and disburse monies and waste. He's been screaming about it for a long time but his voice is never heard by those "CHIEFS". lET'S VOTE THEM IN FOLKS...

I will not try to persuade your vote for the Team I believe to be the best as of now. May I also say, NO not my immediate family member, wife nor I received any loan from HTC Lolo.

    Here are some places I read;

    https://www.facebook.com/pages/The-FaaSamoa-factor-NO-SPIN-ZONE/25989049...

    here at samoanews.com

    talanei.com

everyone of their websites, their facebook pages, and twitter accts.

    basically Googling each candidate.

Look at what they have done in the past. I will not attempt to pollute your mind with the things I have read. Thank You for your curiosity, but the decision is yours and Team L&L to persuade your vote, most of all you questioning and by participating in the process and encouraging participation demonstrates that you have already made a difference. Your responsibility as a voter is to use your power wisely.

  • ASESRO staff denies there is a 1602 ‘draft report’ — instead calling it an ‘internal memo’   2 years 5 weeks ago

It is simple minded people bashing on the success of another human being. If you remember the story of why you dont cover a bucket of Samoan Crabs, it is a simple fact. Samoans love to smile in your face, and stab you in the back.

Draft report is as fake as the person who wrote/published it. If you do not who or whom are puppets, then you are very oblivious to your surroundings.

  • With fiscal responsibility holding steady as the issue poll voters find most important, which team best exemplifies this trait?   2 years 5 weeks ago

Im asking an honest question here. Not being sarcastic or anything. Im truly searching for answers because I dont have them. What makes Lolo in your mind above the rest? I heard him speak before. He seems like a nice man. His partner Lemanu seems very strong. In fact impressed me. But Lolo is the front runner so I want to know what makes him better then the rest.

I can only say one thing about Lolo in my mind. He was President of the Senate. The most powerful political position in American Samoa. What did he accomplish with that power? I cant think of anything. So if I cant think of anything, it could not have been too much. It certainly wasnt anything positive towards the economy, roads, hospital or education. Which is really the foundation of our society. In my opinion. Maybe he made yoru loan easier at DBAS but is that really a qualification for governor? Im just asking.

So unless someone can tell me that being a nice guy is more important as our Governor then accomplishing great things with very little to work with, I am going to have to say that Save or Jones look to me like pretty good choices. S & S are new blood and definitely have a lot to prove so would work hard to get their accomplishments on record. T & T combine international business and money management which we know has been a weak point for ASG. Having these two great choices out there standing alone with out all the cultural biases and who you know family votes for the big dogs with high titles throwing money at village matai for votes seems to be a good thing.

But thats just where my mind is at now. Its open for change. Thats what these discussions are about right?

Oh and I see Afoa is way ahead in this poll on Samoa News. Which makes me wonder if they are voting for Afoa or Carlos Sanchez. Because Carlos Sanchez seems to be in the middle of everything. Isnt that Afoa's Son in law? Afoa is another very likable man. But based on what I see, wouldnt it seem clear that a vote for Afoa is a vote for Carlos Sanchez. Do we want Carlos Sanchez running the Government? Only in Samoa.

What a surprise - Yet another government official in American Samoa is accused of corruption and embezzlement. And the defense will undoubtedly have something to do with "our culture."

  • Oral arguments in candidate challenge set for Tuesday   2 years 5 weeks ago

Sorry Jr, but every time you post something it sounds like a untuned violin.

I commend Save & Sandra for challenging the Election Office, and forcing Chief Election Officer Soliai to review and assess if there is a legit breach of law. Save & Sandra are intelligent individuals and if this is their conviction and belief let the Appellate Court bring light to the challenge and issue a ruling fair in the eyes of the law.

It will all come down to the interpretation of ASCA 6.0301 (f), and if Sandra & Save have reasonable and sufficient evidence to substantiate their challenge.

My concern is that under Title 6, Elections Chapter 3 Issues/Candidates, subtitle (f)All candidates for Governor and Lieutenant Governor, and Delegate to the United States House of Representatives are entitled to a list of all the qualified electors in the Territory within 10 days after the close of registration for the Territory.

What is in the by-laws for Chapter 6 Elections, differs from what Samoa News cites as the basis for which Save & Sandra has issued a challenge - that the other gubernatorial candidates legitimacy to be on the ballot should be denied because they failed to resign from their position in ASG 60 days prior to actively campaigning. Was this law a addendum to Chapter 6, or is it another code. Because it is not ASCA 6.0301 (f)? If so, where can I find this?

Good luck to the Appellate Court. I'm sure their ruling is forthcoming. The outcome will either be political assaination for Save & Sandra or another gubernatorial team. At least Save & Sandra exercised their rights to do the right thing. They are a team that goes against the grain and status quo and I like that.

    Thanks

Read for yourselves. While your heart may be ignorant, your brain, that God blessed you with, can be utilized for something your eyes may be deceiving. If you can, without bias nor love for your family/friends, etc... tell me how Lolo is not above any other Candidate for Governor, then I will CHANGE my vote.

  • Togiola: Put election of senators on Nov ballot   2 years 5 weeks ago

The Senate of American Samoa are the guardians of American Samoa culture. However, the Governor errors in thinking the election process can be kept a local issue. The election process under US federal law "in which we are a territory of" CAN NOT have racial language or bias in any way. Under the US umbrella, you can not discriminate in an election. Togiola is a lawyer. Maybe he likes the idea of open elections and maybe I even agree with him. But to say you can have elections under US rule that is bias, racial and unconstitutional? What was he thinking? If a Chinese is born here, is of age and has no felony record, he should be allowed to run for senator under normal US election laws. Samoan Titles and such will mean nothing under election laws as viewed by the USA. American Samoa is not a sovereign country that can make its own laws with out any say whats so ever from the United States. We can make changes to our daily routine with out to much trouble. But change election laws that violate US constitution. How stupid is that...

  • Oral arguments in candidate challenge set for Tuesday   2 years 5 weeks ago

    Jr
I dont take any offense to your response as it would seem you may have desired me too. In fact I embrace your willingness to voice your opinion as you are most clearly entitled to it. You also speak very intelligently so I feel strongly you should be heard. (Minus the "clownish" remark.) But I think you may be over looking some very clear facts. Past mistakes or unrecognized violations of election law are not grounds for allowing continued violations. Save and Sandra have petitioned the election office and appealed to the court in the matter of violations that seem to be clear by law. It is absolutely in their right to do so.

Where this matter is different from any other violation of local law which the US federal government turns a blind eye to on a daily basis at the will and insistence of our own leaders is that this is still a US territory. And there are three things that the US Federal Government will jump all over our butts on which are; human trafficking, human rights violations and election problems. The phrase "Federal zero tolerance" comes to mind. The USA projects its power and policies across the world by doing its very best to keep its own house in order on these three fundamental issues. Not perfect but definitely something they take very very seriously. If you think that Judge Kruse who is not an employee of ASG rather a a direct hire from the US Federal Department of the interior is going to allow even the slightest infraction of election law brought before him under his watch and the watchful eye of his bosses at the interior, you are sadly mistaken. Kruse is a hard man but he is no idiot.

I understand why you said my post was very presumptuous. Yes, perhaps it was a little. But the law is clear and the violations were clear and documented. This is about as close to an open and shut case as there ever was. I dont feel there is any chance for these four Gubernatorial candidates and their lawyers to maneuver. Clarity is there. As sure as the sun will rise tomorrow and the sun will set in the evening. This will be a Save vs Jones race. The only question in my mind is what I have already stated. Will Save and Jones stand their ground and not play politics with the ejected power houses so for once we have a chance at a cleanly run Government instead of a mafia style government. Or will they cave in to the temptations of powerful endorsements to win the election at the cost of being puppets for the next four years.

Save may have under-estimated the huge cultural back lash from his choice to pursue this and realize he must strike a deal to get back in good standing with his own people. But Jones doesnt have this hanging over his head. He is the anomaly. He is probably the only one the voter can trust because he can be held accountable and easily impeached. Not so easy with a Samoan. We forgive our people for anything. Even things they do right before our eyes. But we would not forgive a Palagi. So he is more likely to not mess around. But he also can not be bargained with as easily either in things that go on behind closed doors as we know they do now. So I dont know. I think this election is very exciting and will make history books no matter how it turns out.

    TO MR. MIKE NIUMATA

I DO NOT KNOW HOW OLD YOU ARE, BUT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT SOMETHING THAT OUR FOREFATHERS ESTABLISHED ABOUT OUR SENATORS AND NOT TO CHANGED ANY THING THAT THEY (FOREFATHER)DID FOR US. I AM WITH YOU A 100% BUT THIS ARE THE SAME PEOPLE (FONO/SENATORS) THAT MADE THIS CHANGES THAT WE HAVE AND THIS ARE THE SAME MATAI/SAOS/TOFAS THAT ARE CRYING NOW ABOUT WHAT THE GOV. IS SAYING NOW. I AM WITH THE GOV. WHY NOT THE PEOPLE OF TUTUILA AND MANUA VOTE FOR THERE SENATOR TO THE FONO.

    MAKE A LONG STORY SHORE

MR. NIUMATA! WHAT OUR FOREFATHERS ESTABLISHED FOR TUTUILA AND MANUA WAS THAT "ONLY TAMALII FROM EACH COUNTY CAN BE SENATORS" NOT ANY TULAFALES OR TOFA THIS IS WHAT OUR FOREFATHER ORIGINALLY ESTABLISHED FOR US AND OUR TRADITIONALL CULTURE.

THAT IS WHY VELEGA, LUALEMAGA, CALEAI, GAOTEOTE AND OTHER TULAFALE OR TOFA ARE AFRAID OFF. IF THIS GOES BACK TO THE ORIGINAL CULTURES (TAMALII AND MAOPU ONLY).

SO IF YOU WANT WHAT OUR FOREFATHERS THAN LETS GO BACK TO "NA O MAUPU/TAMALII E TOFIA I LE MAOTA MAOALUGA O LE FONO" E SA SA LAVA SE TULAFALE PO O SE TOFA. O LE MEA LEA SA FAAVAE MAI AI TUTUILA MA MANUA. A E LE TALITONU ALU E FESILI I NI TAGATA MATUTUA PE SUESUE TALAAGA O SI TA MALO.
