Former first lady Susana Leiato Lutali, the wife of the late governor A.P. Lutali, passed away at around 6:45am yesterday at LBJ Medical Center.

 Mrs. Lutali held the matai title of Maeata’anoa of Fagaitua.

“My mother passed away peacefully surrounded by all of her kids and family. She heard all of us saying our goodbyes,” said daughter Josie Lutali. “She was diagnosed with uterus cancer last year which was inoperable, so we have accepted it.”

For 2010 the national 30-day mortality rate in mainland hospitals for heart attacks was 16%. At LBJ it was under 11% - according to LBJ Medical Center chief executive officer Mike Gerstenberger who said, statistically, your chance of surviving is 5% better, if you were treated at LBJ then if you were treated anywhere on the mainland. But he also said that for heart failure it is an entirely different story.

MAN ACCUSED OF ASSAULTING WIFE

A man accused of assaulting his wife denied the second degree assault charge against him when he was arraigned in the High Court yesterday before Chief Justice Michael Kruse.

Samoa News is withholding the name of the defendant to protect the identity of the victim.  The defendant is charged with second degree assault a class D felony which carries a jail term of up to five years, a fine of up to $5,000 or both.

To assist the efforts of law enforcement in combating tobacco smuggling in American Samoa, Congressman Faleomavaega Eni introduced last Friday in the US House the Stop Tobacco Smuggling in the Territories Act of 2012 (H.R. 5934).

The late Reverend Elder Oka Fauolo from Samoa is regarded as a father of the Congregational Christian Church, the spiritual father of a nation and a man for everyone.

Rev Oka, as he was widely known, was revered as a spiritual advisor to the leaders of his country, including the Head of State, his highness Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese Efi.

His funeral last month is described by many as majestic, the likes of which would not be seen again.

An ava ceremony was the symbol of peace, forgiveness and reconciliation when the Police met the family of Tagaloasa Filipaina at Faleatiu, yesterday.

The ceremony was the first official meeting between the parties to make peace. Most importantly, it allowed Police to return to the ground, which nearly claimed the lives of three more Police officers, last month. Present was the Assistant Police Commissioner, Leaupepe Fatu Pula with other senior Police officers.

The problems of high medical costs, widespread waste, and tens of millions of people without insurance will require Congress and the president to keep looking for answers, whether or not the Affordable Care Act passes the test of constitutionality.

This past Thursday evening, the Hawaiian Airlines flight brought in June Jones and his Goodwill Mission group, which was greeted by Samoa Bowl Chairman Leala Melila Purcell, Peter Gurr, and the rest of the Samoa Bowl committee, that crowded the Pago Pago International Airport.
