A game in transition

It was a strange feeling last weekend at Veterans Memorial Stadium to hear American Samoa high school football players talk about fly-half, prop and hooker instead of the normal quarterback, running back and middle linebacker. And the word ‘scrum’ rather than ‘huddle’? Surely there must have been a penalty in there somewhere. But, no. The football players were only making the transition from gridiron to rugby.



Folasa Galea’i PX hearing scheduled

A preliminary examination hearing for a young man who claimed a package that came through the mail containing a large quantity of methamphetamine has been scheduled for Thursday. Folasa Galea’i, who is 19-years-old, is charged with unlawful possession of a controlled substance, methamphetamine with intent to distribute.



Satellite based connection between Territory and FEMA now in place for emergencies

A newly installed satellite based telecommunication system will be used as another line of communication between American Samoa and federal government officials if and when other lines of communications fail during a disaster.

The FEMA National Radio System (FNARS) was installed more than a week ago at the Emergency Operations Center, located at the Territorial Emergency Management Coordinating Office (TEMCO), a bureau of the local Department of Homeland Security (ASDHS).



Burglary, felony stealing charges filed after iPhone stolen from taxi

A man in his 20s, Andrew Peters, has been charged with burglary and felony stealing on allegations that he burglarized a taxi that was parked in front of a store in Pago Pago and took off with an iPhone.

Peters made his initial appearance in the District Court yesterday morning and his bail has been set at $30,000.

ATTACKERS IN SE’ETAGA ASSAULT CASE ORDERED TO PAY FINE

The two men charged in connection with an assault case in Se’etaga November last year, which landed a man in the hospital, were placed on probation on the condition they pay fines and serve multiple hours of community service.

Gafatasi Taveeveu and Logo Fa’amausili were initially charged with second-degree assault and public peace disturbance.

Yesterday’s story titled, “ASG workers given ‘absence with pay’ for Samoa Jubilee”, incorrectly states that Samoa’s 50th Independence celebration is May 30 to June 2. The celebration is actually May 31 to June 5 (all Samoa time). Samoa News apologies for the  incorrect information.



“PLEASE POSTPONE PLANS TO DRY DOCK MV SILI”

Dear Editor:

Because I have no time to in-person meet with Director Matagi R. McMoore of Port Administration to request postponement of his proposed plan for the M.V, Sili, I hope you will print this letter. 

Director McMoore, please reconsider your plan to dry-dock the M.V. Sili this week, for the sake of our residents who have left for Tutuila to witness their children, relatives, and siblings graduate from high school, unless further delayed for at least two weeks will cause irreparable harm to the vessel.



Twelve seniors graduate from Iakina

The Iakina Adventist Academy (IAA) held their 2012 Commencement Exercise this past Sunday morning inside the Iakina Church chapel in Iliili with 12 seniors receiving their high school diplomas—ending twelve years of hard work, and beginning a new chapter in their young lives.

The chapel was packed with parents, families and friends of the graduating class. Master of Ceremonies was Jacinta Puletele Peleti, who is also the principal of IAA.

Last Friday evening, the graduating class of 2012 for Pacific Horizons School lived their last day as “Navigators” when their graduation ceremony was held at the LDS Stake Center in Ottoville before friends, family and honored guests who were present to fill the evening with memories.



Another Toa o Samoa killed in action in Afghanistan

American Samoa native and Toa o Samoa, U.S. Army Spc. Tofiga J. Tautolo, 23, died over the weekend in Afghanistan, where he was deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Tautolo, whose home of record is Wilmington, Calif., died May 27, in Bati Kot, Nangarhar province, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when his vehicle was attacked with an enemy improvised explosive device, according to the U.S. Defense Department.
