PM Tuilaepa slams hi-tech fautasi banned from race

Samoan Prime Minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi has dismissed the high-tech fautasis owned by some villages in American Samoa saying that they are actually not fautasi.

“They are no different from high-tech yachts built by pouring liquid plastic into moulds to form the body of the boat when it hardens and the moulds have been taken off,” said Tuilaepa in his weekly radio program 2AP ma le Palemia.



Court in Samoa strikes out village council 25 million dollar land claim

The Supreme Court in Samoa has upheld the Samoa government Trust Estates Corporation strike out motion against a land compensation claim of around 25 million US dollars by Satapuala village council.

The same ruling has also struck out the Alii and Faipule or village council claim for the return of more than eight thousand acres of land situated at Faleolo opposite the international airport.

The village matais claimed that the disputed land, was unlawfully sold during the German and New Zealand administrations.

The federal court in Washington DC denied this week six separate motions by Sanford Limited, which seeks to dismiss federal charges against the New Zealand based company, whose fishing vessel San Nikunau is alleged to have been non-compliant with the federal Act of Pollution from Ships (APPS) while fishing in the waters of American Samoa for the past six years.

Sanford and a former chief engineer are also charged with obstruction of justice. The defendants have rejected the allegations and entered not guilty pleas to a federal indictment.



ASCC group selected for Solomons Arts Fest

The American Samoa Community College dance group has been selected to represent the territory, in the “performing arts” category for traditional song and dance, at the 11th Festival of the Pacific Arts hosted this year in the Solomon Islands under the theme “Culture in Harmony with Nature”.

The ASCC group will be part of the estimated 50 member delegation American Samoa is sending to the Festival, held from July 1-14, 2012.
