MORE TAX REFUNDS RELEASED BY TREASURY DEPARTMENT

Just in time for the Flag Day 2012 celebration, the Treasury Department released on Monday 745 refund checks totaling $956,186 with $335,894 in local and $620,291 in Additional Child Tax Credit (ACTC), said Tax Office manager Melvin Joseph and that these refund checks are for those who filed up to Feb. 21st.

In support of the ongoing partnership with the local Chamber of Commerce, the Commerce Department has invited 15 businesses (retail/food) and 10 outreach organizations to participate in the May 12th Community Fair event - Oceans Day 2012.]

In support of Earth Day on April 22, the  the National Park of American Samoa reminds residents that they can do little things everyday to help the Earth.

The national park recommends that everyone in American Samoa and visitors take actions everyday to help make  climate cleaner and be a part of the solution. A first step is to place all rubbish in bins.

Junior youth groups facilitated by trained youth “animators” help youth to develop their latent capabilities and contribute to meaningful service in the community.  The groups engage in learning, socializing, arts, sports and service activities. Attention is given to enhancing their powers of expression, recognizing the moral issues underlying everyday decisions and the moral implications of their speech and actions, developing friendships, withstanding negative peer pressure, building unity and enhancing global citizenship.

The Nursing Department at the American Samoa Community College (ASCC) invites the public to attend a four-day Health Fair event that begins at the EOB this coming Tuesday, April 24th, then moves to the Market Place on Wednesday, Laufou Shopping Center on Thursday, and the ASCC campus Friday.

Samoa prime minister Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi says his country joining the World Trade Organization will open the gateway for trade with American Samoa.

Tuilaepa, who was in American Samoa for the 2012 Flag Day celebration on Apr. 17 and 18, also spoke briefly about the newly established Polynesian Leaders Group - an eight member organization made of Polynesian countries.

Gov. Togiola Tulafono has lashed out to the Samoa government owned Samoa Shipping Service for leaving behind in Pago Pago about 40 members of a village group from Samoa that performed in last week’s Flag Day celebration.

The governor has also ordered his legal team to carried out a complete probe as to whether Samoa Shipping Service and its Pago Pago agent, Polynesian Shipping, violated any territorial laws by not taking last Friday morning all members of the Lano village group, who were brought into the territory on the MV Lady Naomi, owned by Samoa Shipping.
