Wet Hawaii weather continues through Friday

HONOLULU (AP) -- The sunshine Hawaii is normally known for has been replaced with thunderstorms and large pieces of hail.

National Weather Service meteorologist Tom Birchard says Friday morning's hail storm over windward Oahu is "unprecedented" for Hawaii. He says not only is it highly unusual for hail to fall over Hawaii, but some stones were as large as three inches.

He says cold weather in the middle and upper levels of the atmosphere has led to strong updrafts that has kept the ice chunks from melting before hitting the ground.



Travel industry pioneer passes away

Jette Pritchard, a long time resident of the territory and a pioneer in the local travel industry, passed away on Tuesday March 6 at her home in Leone, where she lived next door to her son Jason, his wife Emma and their children, Jette’s grandsons, 7-year old Aidan, and 4-year old Amani, who were her pride and joy. According to Jason, Jette died peacefully in her sleep.
