TMO Marist Sevens Draws Big Guns

Top 10 teams from Apia have confirmed their participation in the TMO Marist Pago International Sevens tournament slated for April 13 and 14.  Tournament director, Tuifa’asisina Tau "Tonkaman" Toluono revealed this information during the American Samoa Rugby Union meeting held at the New Market’s conference room in Fagatogo on Tuesday.

AMERICAN SAMOA’S CJ FLOOR QUALIFIES FOR SUMMER OLYMPICS IN LONDON

It's official, the American Samoa Flag will be seen on the world stage, flown at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, England, this Summer (July 27-August 12), in the sport of wrestling, thanks to the efforts of CJ Floor, who represented the territory in the African/Oceania Qualification Tournament that is taking place now (March 16-18) in Morocco.

 Floor was able to earn a Silver Medal in the 96kg class in Freestyle Wrestling.  Lia Mata’afa, another American Samoa wrestler will be competing today (which is Sunday in Morocco).



Aunu’u gets siren warning system installed

With the successful installation of the outdoor siren on Aunu’u island Tuesday, Mike Sala, director of the local Department of Homeland Security (ASDHS) said it “is now online and fully operational”.

Aunu'u's siren installation delay in the past was attributed to no vessel available to safely enter the shallow harbor in Aunu’u.

Togiola seeks help from two federal agencies

While attending last month’s meetings of the nation’s governors with President Barack Obama and his cabinet, Gov. Togiola Tulafono says he was able to meet with the Secretaries of Transportation and Education to discuss several issues pertaining to American Samoa.

Speaking on his weekend radio program, Togiola said that during the meeting with the USDOT, he pointed out the setbacks of local tourism development due to the high fares from the US to the territory.



Fagaitua HS tops 2012 JROTC Challenge

This year featured another top title for the Eastern Star communities, as the Fagaitua Vikings claimed the title for the “2012 Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) Cadet Challenge”, that was held last Friday at the Veterans Memorial Stadium in Tafuna.

This year’s challenge was co-hosted by Kanana Fou and Manu’a High School.

Women’s Community Action Program to hold “Gardening for Profit” series

Mrs. Brooke Gurr Agriculture Facilitator with the Women’s Community Action Program will be teaching a “Gardening for Profit” course. W-CAP of American Samoa has been awarded a grant by the Walmart Foundation and the Honolulu Walmart (Facility #3478) through the Local Community Contribution/Hunger Outreach Grant Program.

LOMITUSI FILIGA

Chief Justice Michael has accepted a plea agreement between the government and Lomitusi Filiga who is facing weapon charges. Filiga was initially charged with unlawful use of a weapon, a felony, with misdemeanor charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, third-degree assault, and public peace disturbance, for allegedly pointing a gun at a relative, in Fagatogo.
