CJ Floor to represent territory in Olympic qualifier

CJ Floor’s home state of New York boasts some of the best wrestlers in the country. Now Floor, a young man with Samoan ties,  will represent American Samoa in the African/Oceania Wrestling Championship qualifiers taking place in Morocco, Africa from March 16-17 for the 2012 Olympics in London, England from July 27-August 12 2012.

“I would like to thank my dad, Carl Floor, grandma Latea Floor, the American Samoa National Olympic Committee and Ethan Lake and everyone else that helped me get this far in the world’s greatest sport,” said CJ Floor.



Government refiles, Western District Governor charged

Western District Governor Satele Galu Satele Sr. appeared before District Court Judge John Ward yesterday morning after the government refiled charges in connection with Satele allegedly ordering two village officials of Vailoa to damage a grave of a relative last year.

Satele is now charged with property damage second degree, a class A misdemeanor punishable with up to one year in jail and/or a fine of up to $1,000, or both.



SSIC opens hearings into LBJ finances and operations

Lualemaga: Non-payment of subsidies is just one issue

LBJ Medical Center is the first government entity to be called before the Senate Select Investigative Committee's (SSIC) chaired by Senator Lualemaga Faoa.

The committee convenes Monday for its first investigative hearing at 9am and subpoenas for documents and witnesses have been issued said Lualemaga.

Subpoenaed witnesses include LBJ chief executive executive officer Michael Gerstenberger, chief financial officer Viola Babcock and board chairman Moananu Va, said Lualemaga. All witnesses will be put under oath before the hearing commences.



Fono News: Governor calls special session for Monday

Just hours after the Fono officially ended the 32nd Legislature's 3rd regular session yesterday morning a communique to Fono leaders from Gov. Togiola Tulafono was received, calling for a special session to convene Monday for not more than 30 calendar days.

Senate President Gaoteote Palaie Tofau, knowing the administration's appropriations bills for the LBJ Tropical Medical Center were either rejected or pending in both Fono chambers, had just told senators that morning no word had been received from the governor calling for a special session.



Mariners advised to prepare for severe weather throughout Hawaiian Islands

HONOLULU —The Coast Guard is advising all mariners in the Hawaiian Islands to prepare their vessels for severe weather affecting the Hawaiian Islands throughout the weekend.



Fishery Council agrees on American Samoa swordfish fishery measures

TUMON BAY, Guam —The Western Pacific Regional Fishery Management Council today in Guam agreed to management measures that would permit a longline fishery for swordfish to develop in American Samoa. Measures currently in place inhibit the fishery as they require longline vessels to set hooks below 100 meters to deter interactions with sea turtles.

Elliot Siaumau Jr’s lawyer Sharron Rancourt filed a motion to clarify a condition of work release for her client. The hearing was presided over by Chief Justice Michael Kruse.

Rancourt told the court, the hearing for work release granted for her client had him working at the Pisisami Trucking. Part of his job is that he drives the trucks however, Warden Maifea says the defendant can be on work release but he cannot operate a vehicle or a truck.

Service Learning site visit to ASCC

Two representatives from the University of Hawaii Service Learning Program, Executive Director Atina Pascua and State Network Director Denise Pierson, visited American Samoa last week to make site visits and observe the many Service Learning projects integrated into the curriculum at the American Samoa Community College (ASCC). 



2012 AmSam Cherry Blossom Princess named

Miss Dolly Virginia Garrison who has been selected as the 2012 American Samoa Cherry Blossom Princess by the American Samoa Society of Washington, DC, Cong. Faleomavaega reported to the media this week.

The American Samoa Society of Washington, DC is a nonprofit organization which is a member of the National Conference of State Societies (NCSS) who sponsor the annual Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, DC.
