Nonu market takes a dive

The international nonu market has taken a nose dive and it seems to be spiralling out of control.

So warns the Nonu Association of Samoa based on “evidence of an increasing worldwide recession.” In a statement issued yesterday, President Garry Vui says the market is declining.

“Nonu juice/products have a limited worldwide market as a health product at present, irrespective of what is reported in the media locally or overseas and with evidence of an increasing worldwide recession, this market is in decline.



Motion for a new trial denied in Pago Pago Yacht Club vs. ASG ruling

In a Feb. 21st decision, the Trial Division of the HIgh Court denied a motion for a new trial by Pago Pago Yacht Club Inc., over its lease with the American Samoa Government at Utulei Beach. The 5-page decision is signed by Chief Justice Michael Kruse and Associate Judge Mamea Sala Jr.



Satellite based weather tracking system now operational

ASDHS Director calls it “significant addition” to emergency management

Department of Homeland Security has a new capability to track severe weather conditions while the weekend’s testing of the outdoor siren warning system was a success.

ASDHS director Mike Sala says the new system, called the Emergency Management Weather Information Network, or EMWIN, provides the emergency management community with access to a set of National Weather Service (NWS) warnings, watches, forecasts, and other products at no cost to the territory.

LEVAO PUAULA

A 69-year old man is facing assault and public peace disturbance charges after he allegedly struck his nephew several times with a shovel.

Levao Puaula of Tafuna was upset that his 16-year old nephew, who had been drinking, was swearing profanely on the front lawn of their home. The defendant, who spent the weekend in jail, made his initial appearance in the District Court yesterday morning.

SECOND ROUND OF TRAINING FOR INTERESTED U.S. MASTERS/ CAPTAINS

A second round of training for those interested in being U.S. masters/ captains, will start March 5th for two weeks. 

The class is an improved training cycle, with areas identified from the first course as needing more training time highlighted. As a result, training the days will be longer to benefit those attending — and to make sure that they completely understand the subjects discussed or taught, including hands-on instruction.



Bluesky denies all claims made by former employee

Bluesky Communications and Pulelei’ite Li’amatu Tufele Jr., the company’s Chief Operating Officer are denying allegations by a former employee, Alex Alan Lara-Ramirez for breach of contract and wrongful termination.

The defendants, in their response, which was filed before the court last month, state that Lara was not subject to performing any extra contractual work.



Rep. Sanitoa calls for House review of StarKist freezer plan

Says DOI funding for wharf renovation may be in jeopardy

Concerned with the status of federal funding for renovation of the main dock, now that the StarKist Samoa storage freezer is to be built in the same area, Rep. Larry Sanitoa yesterday called for a House Transportation Committee hearing to review the issue, along with the matter of an environmental impact study for the site.

The Tualauta faipule made the verbal request during yesterday’s House session and Rep. Alexander Eli Jennings, chairman of the transportation committee, has scheduled a hearing for next Monday.



Just Asking: What’s the tax refund situation?

Dear Samoa News...

I recently have been told about Amerika Samoa's Tax Refund situation.

It was explained to me that when someone goes in to file their tax, the government will take a 2% cut off their W2 before filing. Once the government figures out what the person's refund amount would be, again the government will take another cut, this time 6%.



TERRITORIAL SPELLING BEE SET FOR WEDNESDAY

It’s that time of year... the best spellers on island will be under the lights and on the spot at KVZK studios in Utulei Wednesday — the 29th of February (a Leap Year day) — for the annual Territorial Spelling Bee. It is the 18th consecutive spelling bee since the first one was held in the territory in 1995.

"This year's Spelling Bee promises to be more challenging than ever.” says Evelyn Lilio Satele, the official coordinator of the “Bee”.
