$1.4m stolen from Samoa Customs found

Only $4,000 of $1.4million stolen from the Ministry of Revenue has not been recovered according to the Police. Assistant Police Commissioner, Le’aupepe Fatu Pula said the money was found at Fagali’i-Uta on Tuesday night.

Le’aupepe said $36,000 of the stolen money was in cash and the rest were cheques.
Police recovered only $32,000 of the stolen cash.

The money was receipts for Mond
ay due o be banked Tuesday morning when the theft was discovered.
Le’aupepe said two Junior Officers of the Finance Department of the Ministry are now in custody to await their court appearances.



2010 census reveals jump in local housing units

Close to 11,000 housing units in American Samoa were recorded during the 2010 Census count, compared to just over 10,000 housing units for the 2000 census, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, who released last week more data from the 2010 census for American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Census Bureau describes a housing unit as a house, an apartment, a mobile home or trailer, a group of rooms, or a single room that is occupied, or, if vacant, is intended for occupancy as separate living quarters.



Sex-changing treatment for kids: It's on the rise

CHICAGO (AP) -- A small but growing number of teens and even younger children who think they were born the wrong sex are getting support from parents and from doctors who give them sex-changing treatments, according to reports in the medical journal Pediatrics.

It's an issue that raises ethical questions, and some experts urge caution in treating children with puberty-blocking drugs and hormones.



Oil jumps to 9-month high after Iran cuts supply

(AP) —Oil prices jumped to a nine-month high above $105 a barrel on Monday after Iran said it halted crude exports to Britain and France in an escalation of a dispute over the Middle Eastern country's nuclear program.
