Green Turtle found dead at Lions Park

A Green Turtle was found on Thursday, Feb 16, still in the water at the shoreline at Lion's Park behind the Tennis Court area, by locals who contacted Deputy Director Pili Gaoteote of the Department of Parks and Recreation ( 2nd from right). Gaoteote called the police, who in turn informed DMWR of the stranded turtle.

Alden Tagarino, Wildlife Biologist at the Department of Marine and Wildlife, who responded to the call said, “The call came in at around 1:30pm and I got to the scene at around 2pm.”



Territorial Delegates seek help with highway funding

In a joint letter this week to the U.S. House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure, territorial delegates are asking for support in Congress to keep the Territorial Highway and the Puerto Rico Highway programs funded through the Highway Trust Fund.

The letter, addressed to Committee chairman John L. Mica, voiced the delegates concerns regarding Section 1103 of H.R. 7, the American Energy and Infrastructure Jobs Act of 2012, “which would change the source of funding for the highway programs in our jurisdictions.” 



Consumer Price Index fourth quarter shows increases

The high cost of hard liquor and beer contributed to the 2.4% increase in the Alcohol Beverages Group in the 4th quarter of 2011 compared to the same period in 2010, according to the 4th quarter Consumer Price Index (CPI) report covering Oct.-Dec. 2011 released Tuesday by the local Commerce Department.

For the Food Group, it increased by 1% due to higher cost of shrimp, corn, curry spices, ham, Lipton tea, vegetable oil, lamb-flaps and coffee brew.



Government holiday set for Monday — President’s Day

Local and federal government offices in the territory will be closed Monday for President’s Day, a national holiday.

ASG employees required to work will be paid in accordance with local rules and regulations. Also closed Monday are the two private banks and some local businesses. It's unclear if StarKist Samoa will be working Monday, as efforts to obtain information  from the corporate office on the mainland, were unsuccessful at press time.
