Parks & Rec set to host Tri-Sport competitions in February

The Department of Parks and Recreation would like the public to know about the upcoming ‘2012 Open Tri-Sport Competition’ for anyone 16 years of age and older, with seven members per team, slated for next month February to be held on the 4th and the 6th, at the Lions Park in Tafuna, with other ‘Tri-Sport Competitions’ planned for later in the month.



Holiday Fast Pitch Softball League heads into playoffs

The team of Alanoa, moments after their victory over the American Samoa National Baseball team with a score of 5- 4 last Saturday at the Tony Solaita Baseball field, during the ‘Holiday Fast Pitch Softball League’, which began on Saturday, December 17.

The league, which is sponsored by the American Samoa Government, Department of Parks and Recreation, American Samoa National Olympic Committee and the American Samoa Softball Association, will be heading into its playoffs this week, with all of the games being played at the Tony Solaita Baseball field.

Former Attorney General’s office employee jailed

The High Court has jailed a former employee of the Attorney General’s office, Tiresa Su’a, convicted of misappropriating more than $77,000 in government funds in connection with the Certificate of Identity (CI) Scam.

Su’a pled guilty to embezzlement and four counts of conspiracy to commit felony stealing.

Federal prosecutors claim that former local Education Department official Paul Solofa initiated the school bus spare parts scheme, something that its witness Gustav Nauer testified to last week in day one of Solofa’s trial at the federal court in Washington D.C.



Parents happy with Ocean Heroes program

The ‘Bruckner Chase Toa o’le Tai’ (Ocean Heroes) program, kicked off at the beginning of January 2012, with SHS as the pilot school for this first Ocean Swimming/Ocean Science PE class that teaches not just ocean swimming, but also ocean science, in order to increase student’s health, safety and knowledge of the ocean. It appears to have been received with a warm welcome, as told to Samoa News by some of the parents of SHS students who are currently enrolled in the program.



Senator Lualemaga stands firm on his opposition to StarKist cold storage facility site

Sen. Lualemaga Faoa strongly maintains his stand that the government’s plan to lease ASG land between the Port Administration building and the inter island dock for StarKist Samoa cold storage freezer is inappropriate and a health hazard.

Lualemaga, last week, responded to Gov. Togiola Tulafono’s reaction to public criticism about the proposed facility, in which the governor stated on his radio program three weekends ago that this project is to help the local economy and asked the community to give the project time to develop before criticisms were voiced.

Voices were raised last Friday during the Senate session after the governor’s nominations for two cabinet members were introduced and assigned to the appropriate committees for confirmation hearings.

The governor has reappointed Dr. Jacinta S. Galeai as director of the Education Department and Ivy Aiumu-Taufa’asau as Chief Procurement Officer. Names for the two nominees were first presented to the Fono for confirmation during the second regular session last year, but failed to muster full Fono support and were officially rejected.



LBJ explains reasons for supplemental funding request

LBJ Medical Center chief financial officer Viola Babcock last week told the House Health/Hospital Committee that the close to $3 million that ASG owed in fiscal year 2011 needs to be paid to help the hospital, which is seeking more than $15 million in its FY 2012 supplemental budget.

Babcock, along with LBJ chief executive officer Mike Gerstenberger and hospital board chairman Moananu Va were called last Wednesday before the House committee to answer questions on the supplemental budget request.
