Tri-Marine asks USDA for multi-million loan guarantee

U.S.-based Tri Marine Group is seeking a multi million loan guarantee from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development for its tuna cannery facility in American Samoa.

The USDA Rural Development briefing papers submitted to the February 2012 meeting of the federal group, Interagency Group on Insular Areas, provides a summary of programs as well as funding allocations for the Rural Development to the insular areas.

New Hawaiian Air baggage policy effective June 1

Hawaiian Airlines does not expect its customers to be greatly affected by a new baggage procedure that goes into effect on Jun. 1 because, according to the airline, most of its passengers travel on single ticket itineraries.

The Honolulu-based carrier first announced the new baggage policy in January this year, with an effective date of May 1, but the airline delayed the implementation of the policy to June 1 “to minimize the effect on our guests,” Hawaiian said in a recent statement.

The young man who touched people’s hearts both here and in Hawaii has died, just one week after arriving in American Samoa and on the day that Hawai’i schools designated as TeeJay Mamea Day.

Tiloi TeeJay Mamea, Jr. lost his battle with brain cancer and passed away in American Samoa Friday morning, May 11, 2012 — but not before he realized one of the wishes on his ‘bucket list’ — to meet his grandfather for the first time, here in American Samoa.

Samoan youth experience conservation

A partnership through the National Park

PAGO PAGO, American Samoa— The National Park of American Samoa, in partnership with the non-profit group American Conservation Experience (ACE), is sending four young Samoan employees on conservation internships to National Park Service sites on the mainland US.

This exchange opportunity will give these exceptional young Samoan men and women exposure to the greater National Park Service mission and culture, as well as conservation work. It also gives them an opportunity to share the Samoan culture with their work crews in those parks.

POLICE STILL LOOKING FOR SUSPECT IN CONTAINER FIRE CASE

It’s now going on three weeks and investigators with the Department of Public Safety have yet to identity a suspect or suspects in a fire that partly gutted a container of merchandise belonging to the H & H store in Pago Pago.



2012 DOI scholarships awarded to local high school students for summer study

The U.S. Department of the Interior and The Junior Statesmen Foundation proudly announce the winners of scholarships to the 2012 Junior Statesmen Summer School.

The scholarships, funded by the Department of the Interior’s Office of Insular Affairs, cover all tuition costs and round trip transportation to the JSA Summer Schools and 2012 Presidential Election Symposium in the USA, and the JSA Diplomat Summer School in Beijing, China.

Mario Batali a hungry chef on food stamp challenge

NEW YORK (AP) -- To much of the world, it was Monday. To Mario Batali, it was Day Four.

The chef, his wife and their two teenage sons are eating for a week on the equivalent of a food stamp budget in protest of potential cuts pending in Congress to the benefit program used by more than 46 million Americans.

That's $31 per person for the week, or about $1.48 per meal each.
