Lawsuit against late DPS Lt. dismissed after 11 years

The Trial Division of the high court has dismissed a lawsuit against late Police Lt Liusila Brown, the Department of Public Safety and the American Samoa Government. The 12 page ruling was issued last week, granting the government’s request to dismiss the lawsuit filed by Setefano Falaniko on October 16, 2000. 



AS RUGBY UNION AND MARIST PAGO REACH AGREEMENT

When Marist Pago announced earlier last month its intention to run the territorial 2012 Flag Day International Sevens competition, it did so without clearing the matter with the American Samoa Rugby Union.  Union president Aumoeualogo Te’o Fuavai was not informed and threatened to prevent Marist Pago from holding the event.



Samoa helps star rapper

Earl Sweatshirt may not be known in Samoa but google him and you’ll find that his whereabouts for the past 18 months has been under constant discussion in the foreign media.

The star American rapper is a member of the Los Angeles's Odd Future, a gang of a dozen teens – rappers, producers, singers and skaters – who have spent the past year becoming the hottest thing in music.  He has been at the Coral Reef Academy at Vaitele for 18 months, and he graduates tomorrow.



Sex education positive move, says Minister

The plan by Catholic schools to introduce sex education into its curriculum is supported by the Minister of Education, Sports and Culture, Magele Mauiliu Magele.

In fact, Magele said sex education has always been embedded in government schools teachings but “was never taught in isolation”.
“Aspects of it (sexuality) have always been there in the curriculum called Gender Education under Health and Physical Education,” the Minister said.

WOMAN CONVICTED OF ASSAULTING 86 YEAR OLD MAN

A jury of five women and two men found Karen Mary Melendez guilty of third degree assault. The assault charge stems from an incident which occurred last April, where Melendez is alleged to have assaulted an 86 year old man from Nu’uuli.

District Court Judge John Ward scheduled sentencing for the defendant on Monday.

Prosecuting for the government is Camille Philippe; while Assistant Public Defender Donna Clement represented Melendez in this matter.

SEARCH FOR PNG FERRY DISASTER'S SURVIVORS CONTINUES UNTIL NEXT WEEK

There are still at as many as 100 people unaccounted for after the sinking of a ferry off the eastern coast of Papua New Guinea on Thursday.

The MV Rabaul Queen sank near the end of a 20 hour journey between between Kimbe and PNG’s second largest city, Lae, after battling high seas.

The PNG Maritime Safety Authority says 246 people have been pulled from the sea, but vessels and aircraft are still searching for bodies.
