SEN. LUALEMAGA TO CHAIR SENATE INVESTIGATING COMMITTEE (SIC)

Senate President Gaoteote Palaie Tofau has appointed the seven-member Senate Investigating Committee (SIC), to be chaired by Sen. Lualemaga E. Faoa, who had chaired the previous Senate investigative committee more than six years ago.

DAVID GOLK

A man accused of trespassing onto private property while intoxicated was sentenced before the District Court yesterday morning.

David Golk of Iliili entered into a plea agreement with the government, pleading guilty to charges of trespassing and drinking in public areas — both are misdemeanors.

Golk was arrested on February 19, 2012 with his bail set at $3,000. The defendant apologized to the court for his wrongdoing and promised the court that he will not break the law in the future.

For those of us who remember the Bay before its industrial destruction began over 50 years ago, that picture of a purse seiner dumping “industrial waste” directly into the Bay epitomizes — seemingly in one small “click” — the sad history and a vivid display of the naked greed and indifference that our people have had to endure from these “exploit at will” foreign investors. LBJ Medical Center appears to be moving ahead with the planned temporary reduction of working hours this weekend as part of the agreement with the government to get the $3 million the government is borrowing from the Workmen’s Compensation Account.



USDOI awards American Samoa $10MIL for CIP

Recognizes Togiola’s last year as Governor

The U.S. Department of Interior has awarded American Samoa more than $10 million in federal funding, which was made public during the federal Interagency Group on Insular Areas (IGIA) annual meeting, and also recognized Gov. Togiola Tulafono’s contribution to the Group, as the governor is serving his last year in office.

The announcements were made public yesterday during the 2012 IGIA annual meeting in Washington D.C. where Interior Secretary Ken Salazar greeted the gathering, and spoke of his department’s efforts to empower insular communities.
