Gov. Togiola signs $3 million interest free loan to LBJ

Lawmakers were told yesterday that Gov. Togiola Tulafono had signed the $3 million loan bill for the hospital, into law.

Togiola officially notified the Fono in a Feb. 16 letter that he had signed the bill and also executed, on behalf of ASG, a loan agreement with LBJ.

All fee increases that were effective Feb. 6, are now rolled back completely and will remain at pre-increase levels until the loan is repaid in full, Togiola wrote.



30 locals prepare to head to Guam for employment

A group of 30 participants in the American Samoa National Emergency Grant (ASNEG) program heads to Guam next Thursday as part of the local ASNEG program to be employed at the military build up on Guam.

Human Resources Department director Evelyn Vaitautolu Langford said this is the only group attending under the ASNEG partnership with the Guam training service provider.



Feds: Nauer responsible for almost $300,000 in bribes

The U.S. Justice Department has calculated that Gustav Nauer is responsible for close to $300,000 in bribes in the federal government’s case against the former American Samoa Department of Education school bus supervisor in the local school bus spare parts scheme.

Prosecutors noted that the calculation on the amount of payments received by the defendant, and the corresponding amount of restitution due from the defendant, was $300,000.



All Stars en route to IFAF Championship

Yesterday, Team American Samoa All Star left for Apia, Samoa, transiting to Down Under to compete in the Under-19 Championship game on February 25 in Brisbane, Australia.

The Championship game is a qualifying event, with the winning team to represent the World Team against Team USA at the IFAF World Cup of Football, in Austin, Texas this June.



Nat'l Park's Dr. Peter Craig retires

PAGO PAGO, American Samoa — The National Park of American Samoa announced the recent retirement of Dr. Peter Craig, who worked in American Samoa for the past 20 years, serving as one of the leading voices for conservation and the environment during his time here.

 During the past 15 years he worked for the National Park of American Samoa, first as a Marine Ecologist and later as Natural Resource Manager.

A man who has appeared before the court for the fourth time, the latest incident involving a handgun, was sentenced to 20 months in jail. Sentencing was handed down by Chief Justice Michael Kruse who was accompanied on the bench by Chief Associate Judge Logoai Siaki.

Umu Te’o, initially faced two charges of unlawful use of a weapon, three counts of third-degree assault and unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, however he pleaded guilty to unlawful use of a weapon and possession of an unlicensed firearm.
