Education law's promise falls short after 10 years

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The No Child Left Behind education law was cast as a symbol of possibility, offering the promise of improved schools for the nation's poor and minority children and better prepared students in a competitive world.

Yet after a decade on the books, President George W. Bush's most hyped domestic accomplishment has become a symbol to many of federal overreach and Congress' inability to fix something that's clearly flawed.



Cargo drone makes debut in Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) -- The U.S. military is testing a revolutionary new drone for its arsenal, a pilotless helicopter intended to fly cargo missions to remote outposts where frequent roadside bombs threaten access by road convoys.

Surveillance drones for monitoring enemy activity and armed versions for launching airstrikes have become a trademark of America's wars in Afghanistan, Iraq and elsewhere in the Middle East. But this is the first time a chopper version designed for transport has ben used operationally.



Tortured Afghan girl wants in-laws jailed

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) -- A 15-year-old Afghan girl who was tortured for months after her arranged marriage has spoken out for the first time since her rescue, saying she hopes her husband and his family are jailed for her abuse.

Sahar Gul became the bruised and bloodied face of women's rights in Afghanistan after she was rescued in late December when an uncle called police.

Speaking in an interview Saturday from a hospital in Kabul, Gul blamed her husband, his parents and his sister for her ordeal.



US based groups support Fagatele changes

Seven U.S. based marine sanctuary groups have voiced “strong support” for the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) plan to expand Fagatele Bay National Marine Sanctuary (FBNMS) to include five additional sites and change the name to the American Samoa National Marine Sanctuary.

Poly Blue takes 16 flights a day to PPG for holidays

An increase in passengers has seen up to 16 Polynesian Blue flights travelling between Apia and American Samoa on a daily basis. General manager, Taua Fatu Tielu told the Samoa Observer yesterday that this was to deal with the outgoing passengers to American Samoa.

American Samoa was blessed in 2011 with no fatalities on the public highway compared to the previous years was the message from Program Coordinator for Highway Safety with the Department of Public Safety, Fred Scanlan during the police awards ceremony held at the Central Station yesterday morning.

The awards program is part of an initiative implemented by Police Commissioner Tuaolo Manaia Fruean to award officers based, among other things, on work performance, and professionalism in carrying out their duties.

Hawaii’s INKED Island Fashion Show closes with tattoo artists

(MEDIA RELEASE) – The work of three tufuga, traditional Samoan tattoo artists Su’a Suluape Alaiva’a Petelo, Su’a Peter Suluape and Su’a Suluape Tau Ah Keni closed Hawaii’s first INKED Island Fashion Show that debuted December 2011 at The Waterfront at Aloha Tower.

INKED will show in California this summer.
