Afoa heads petition to stop cold storage on dock

More than 600 local residents have signed a petition opposing the government and StarKist Samoa’s plans to build a cold storage facility on ASG land between the Port Administration building and the inter island dock.

The petition was submitted with a cover letter dated yesterday from Afoa L. Su’esu’e Lutu to Brett Butler, the StarKist Samoa general manager with copies to Gov. Togiola Tulafono, Fono members, and Lydia Faleafine-Nomura, the local field representative for the U.S. Interior Department.



Jury still out in Paul Solofa trial; no verdict yet

The 12-member jury in the federal government’s case against former Department of Education official Paul Solofa returns today to continue deliberation and it remains unclear as to when a verdict will be announced.

Solofa went on trial last week Wednesday at federal court in Washington D.C. on charges of obstruction of justice and witness tampering and the charges stem from his alleged role in the school bus spare parts scheme during his time as head of the DOE business office several years ago.



Customs search finds contraband in container

The owner of the 20-foot container that has been under police microscope for the past two weeks made his initial appearance before the District Court yesterday morning. Aaron Wisdom from San Diego, California is charged with Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance to wit: marijuana, Possession of Unlicensed Firearm and Unlawful Possession of Ammunition.

SECURITY GUARD ARRESTED

A Pago Plaza building security guard was taken into custody Tuesday evening, after he allegedly sold four marijuana joints to another person. According to police, they confiscated 15 marijuana joints in the suspect’s possession.

The Petesa man who’s now at the Tafuna Correctional Facility is being held in police custody for 48 hours, while Vice and Narcotics division officers work on the police report to be forwarded to the Attorney General’s office for prosecution.



Boys & Girls Clubs of American Samoa officially accepted in Boys & Girls Clubs of America

UTULEI, American Samoa —American Samoa First Lady Mary Ann Tulafono, who serves as Chairperson and Chief Volunteer Officer for the Boys & Girls Clubs of American Samoa, yesterday announced that the local youth club has met all the club requirements and has been accepted as a full-fledged member of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA).

In a letter dated January 12, 2012 from Boys and Girls Clubs of America President James Clark – Mr. Clark wrote:

The government’s utility debt owed to the American Samoa Power Authority has ballooned to more than $8 million, while the cash-strapped power authority has been told of getting just over $45 million to fund operations over the next six months.

In its first quarter performance report for fiscal year 2012, ASPA says it “continues to struggle with its cash flow due to the aging of receivables from our customers while quality of service must be delivered on a daily basis for our people.”



House unanimously endorses Jacinta Galea’i as DOE director

The House yesterday endorsed Gov. Togiola Tulafono’s nomination of Dr. Jacinta S. Galeai as director of the Department of Education. The House last year also approved her nomination, but she was rejected by the Senate resulting in this second appointment to the post.

Prior to yesterday’s unanimous vote of 16-0, the House Education and Financial Aid Committee, chaired by Rep. Lemapu Suiaunoa Talo, held a hearing earlier in the day, which lasted for about 45 minutes.
